I will stand with Newt until/unless HE tells me he’s out.
You are correct. It snuck past me on initial reading. Good catch!
If Newt Gingrich does, officially, drop out of the ‘12 race for POTUS, then who should the majorities of conservative voters/very conservative voters vote for, instead, in the ‘12 race for POTUS, and how does anybody make such a choice really happen, if it’s not going to be voting in the majority for RINO Mitt Romney? Virgil Goode? Gary Johnson? “Blank” the race for ‘12 POTUS? Write-In somebody else-the same person, as a majority of conservative/very conservative voters? How is the U.S. not on its last legs, as a capitalistic country?
Why would a campaign say that right BEFORE the state is voting?
Doesn’t she see how that will hurt his GOTV effort?
You mean in order to guarantee that the richest candidate wins all the time? The deepest pockets would just flood the airways in all the big markets in every key state and win by default forever. You think guys like Santorum or Newt had a hard time competing this time around, under your plan they wouldn't even have a chance. Your national primary day proposal eliminates the ability for a guy with few resources like Santorum to gain traction over the course of a primary and at least have an opportunity to emerge. If you ever, ever, ever want more candidates in touch with the grass roots running for office, you absolutely do not want a national primary day. Not saying what we have is all that great, but national primary day is simply an atrocious alternative.
Please see post 20.
I think we need a Conservative Primary, so that we all get behind ONE candidate who will run against the GOP establishment candidate for the GOP nomination.
We can’t beat a McCain or Romney if we are splitting our vote between 3-5 conservatives. We did the same thing in 2008 as we did this year and it does not work.
If there were 5 conservatives running against GHW Bush in 1980, there would have been no Reagan. Bush would have walked away with it just as Romney is doing.
Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.
I don't have to post crap. Buy a Google button and do your own legwork. There are a bunch of editorials on the subject. Just this week, Newt himself said in an interview that...
"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich told NBC News in an exclusive interview on Monday. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are." He acknowledged that he would have to "reassess" his campaign depending on how he fares in Delaware, a winner-take-all state with 17 delegates at stake.
If you are not aware, "reassess" is political code for drop out.
Yes, and I guess you're saying that the candidates' judgement doesn't matter either?
What if we shorten your statement to the nub:
Since Santorum dropped out, ...the rest of our votes just dont matter.
Damn that Santorum. If he'd stayed in then RCP would do polls and MY vote would still matter! wow.
Amen, brother.
What about a national party day primary #1 to whittle the list of potential candidates. Then have numerous widely-televised debates moderated not at all. Turn on the cameras and mikes and let the 4 or 5 candidates have at it. Let US decide what we think. Great TV too!
Then after a few months, have a national party primary day #2 to select the Presidential candidate. The convention would then nominate and select the veep and everyone give speeches.
Nowhere is it written that we have to do things the way we have been doing them to select a party’s candidates.
An honest Republican Party selection process WOULD produce a Conservative candidate. Elites know it and that’s why it’s been done the way it has been.
Whether intentional or not, this news item is geared to dissuade American voters, in these primary States today, from voting for Gingrich. What other purpose? Why would the Gingrich campaign make this announcement ahead of voting? They wouldn’t. Please see post 20, this thread.
Gawd, that picture is freakin’ horrible. Penguin bites can really hurt. LOL
Why should Iowa determine who the candidate is, how many candidates are eliminated because these little states don’t like them? It’s not fair that the race is already decided before the Texas primary.
Oh please, how many primary voters today would really read an article from the Guardian in the UK and have that sway their opinion?
LOL
As if they don't now?!?!?!
Hey, I agree. I don't like that Iowa goes first all the time. How about we press the party to mix it up more? I'd be all for that. I am not saying the way we are doing it now is necessarily good, I am just saying a national primary day would be even worse.
McCain ran on a shoestring budget during some of the 2008 campaign when everyone had written him off. He didn't have much money to spend and he won anyway.
All I am saying is a national primary day would virtually guarantee the richest candidate(s) swamps the key media markets and wins the nomination every time. Candidates would never have an opportunity to emerge and get stronger as the primary season progresses. It's just not a good idea at all.
