The point I made was the arrogance of claiming to be American - a lazy term nonetheless...when people refer to themselves as such - they take away the true meaning of saying - US Citizen - which is far better and unifying...

Dear friend, who said the term “American” represents all three Americas? And please note, The United States of America is the only country in North, Central, or South America that has America in its name. That may be much of the reason we are called Americans.
The thing is everyone the world over knows what is meant when someone says they are American. If a European is going to come to the USA, they say, "I am going to America". There is only one United States of America. No one says they are going to America if they are headed to Brazil or Canada, or Argentina, they say, "I am going to Brazil, or Canada or Argentina, etc". There is no United states of South America or North America. Only the USA and everyone knows it. There is nothing arrogant about it, it is simply the truth.
