That will just protect my head?
I'm gonna play it safe and get a tin foil cup too. :^)

Yeah, make fun if you want. But after the 1859 solar flares, it was over 50 years until most American homes had electricity.

Jest all you want - but the power goes out and the trucks stop rolling - don't come to my house for food.

Not everything that sounds like science fiction is fiction. It's happened before - around 160 years ago - when about all we had for ‘infrastructure’ was telegraph equipment and transformers. They were knocked out.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/03/110302-solar-flares-sun-storms-earth-danger-carrington-event-science/

“In fact, the biggest solar storm on record happened in 1859, during a solar maximum about the same size as the one we're entering, according to NASA.

That storm has been dubbed the Carrington Event
...In 1859, such reports were mostly curiosities. But if something similar happened today, the world's high-tech infrastructure could grind to a halt.

“What's at stake,” the Space Weather Prediction Center's Bogdan said, “are the advanced technologies that underlie virtually every aspect of our lives.”

Today would be a much bigger event. So hide your head in the sand - better not come up for air.
