Sponsorship is fine....Have done it in the past.
Most recently I've donated extra in memory....In memory of Bah Bah this time. She was a good friend and like Onyx said many of us feel a kinship with our FrFamily, particularly those we are privileged enough to actual enjoy their company in person. Met Bah Bah on a Fr Cruise. Great time! Great memories!

As you can see from my post, I have no problem with sponsorship. In fact there could be more sponsorship. I just hate to see the site dragged down by so many that will not donate.
If the site disappears, those that could have, but didn’t, can look in the mirror, knowing that they didn’t help to save the site that they liked expressing themselves at.

I lurked here for years..joined up, despite my poor typing skills, to support our troops..
I get my news here..I had FR as my homepage before I signed up.
I read a lot! We , like family, have our disagreements..sometimes fierce disagreements... over how to beat advance the conservative cause...but we all agree that we need to fight for this cause.
As onyx says..we have FRiends we have never met that we love and pray for and with. We support one another in these trying times for our Nation.
I have learned so much from FReepers and appreciate so many of them.
Free Republic has given me more than I could repay with my monthly donations.
Long live Free Republic! Thank you, Jim Robinson.

However, and no disrespect intended, why does it require the hundreds of thousands of dollars that are donated every year? Ive helped run websites and Im curious to what this money goes to.I'm just curious, are the websites you help run among the top 1000 most-trafficked websites in the nation?
I work for a company that has a website that isn't even close to the top 1000 and yet the costs are very substantial. Thousands of dollars a month just for the bandwidth. That does not include the hardware, the labor required to run it and renting the space required for the data center.
I assume that John Robinson still runs this website - he'd command a six-figure salary to do this in the private sector and he'd probably have a staff under him to boot.

Very sweet of you to donate in BahBah’s memory because she was a wonderful FRiend to so many FReepers and such an erudite poster. Her commments alone, made the Sunday News Show threads worth reading with her insights.

Sweetest you, Meg. Everything you wrote is true. Some of us have been very fortunate to meet in person, sometimes several times, but the friendships exclusively online are just as solid and just as true and real as the friendships I’ve made in person.
Look at the joy we all shared with you on the 18th with the birth of your beautiful, identical twin great grand sons! Free Republic gave us this shared blessing from God!
There’s no way to put a price tag on that, by a donation or any other means. I’m just thrilled, grateful and happy I can afford to donate the amounts I currently can and hope to be able to increase my Monthly donation, sooner rather than later
God bless and keep you both and LONG LIVE FREE REPUBLIC!
