I was only ten when the news hit that George Reeves was found dead, an apparent suicide. We cruel kids joked that he put on his Superman costume one last time and leaped off the Empire State Building observation deck. But the Wiki entry states that Reeves did it the old fashioned way with a pistol. Speculation as to motive, of course; he was not unemployed after the Superman series ended, but lived in the shadow of the character he was best known for.

Bruno Ganz is an accomplished actor, but just how many films produced in Europe even make it to this side of the pond? The last German film I can recall is “Das Boot” (1982).

Well, George Reeves was a notorious alcoholic who was having an affair with the wife of a local L.A. mob guy. The story was pretty sorted, but the "Superman" connection is a fiction. I think most people believe the story you heard.

I'm not sure how many of Ganz' films got American theatrical releases, but I see as many as I can since discovering "Wings of Desire" in a movie art house.

No little internet oddity can hurt him since most Americans don't even know who he is. He does French, German, Italian and American movies. "The Last Days of Chez Nous" is Australian. I have "Downfall", but won't watch it because I don't want to see him as Hitler.
