U.S peace activist Cindy Sheehan vows to continue tax boycott

SACRAMENTO, Calif., April 19 (Reuters) - California peace activist Cindy Sheehan has agreed to meet with Internal Revenue Service agents seeking to collect back taxes she refuses to pay as a protest of U.S. wars, but she vowed on Thursday to persist in her tax boycott.

Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in action in Iraq while serving in the U.S. Army in 2004, appeared before a federal judge as the government sought a court order requiring her to answer an IRS collection summons seeking information about assets that could be used to satisfy her tax liability.

The 54-year-old activist, who gained widespread attention in August 2005 for her extended anti-war protest outside President George W. Bush's ranch in Texas, said she believes the government is persecuting her for her political beliefs.

"No matter if the government says I owe a penny or $100,000, I'm not paying one penny to them," Sheehan said outside the federal courthouse in downtown Sacramento after the hearing. Her lawyer, Dennis Cunningham of San Francisco, stood at her side as a handful of protesters looked on.

During the hearing, Cunningham acknowledged to U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge John Moulds that Sheehan has not filed a federal income tax return or paid any federal income taxes since her son's death, but that her failure to do so was an act of conscientious objection to the war in Iraq.

He argued that her constitutional rights to freedom of expression and protection from self-incrimination would be violated by answering further IRS questions about her assets.

if she keeps this up, the Treasury will have to hire her.

Okay - Cindy Sheehan is a nut; she’s a liberal nut. I usually have little sympathy for liberals who don’t pay their taxes (that means you tim geitner, and you too warren buffet)- one should reap what one sows. But their are two thoughts that come to mind

a) It would be fun to do a national tax boycott - a la occupy.

b) She did give her son to the cause - how much more should she be asked to give?

Come on, Cindy! You go girl! Tell ‘em you’re not paying a dime no matter what!

Heehee, popcorn time. Can’t wait until they fit her for an orange suit.

Let's see, I just mailed out $9,000 to the IRS to pay the balance of my 2011 Income Taxes.

$4,000 of that was a “penalty” because the Obama Economy forced me to take money from an IRA Account before I turned age 59 1/2.

Why isn’t Cindy Sheehan in Jail? I'm sure I would be if I didn't pay up “my fair share”. I wonder if she will be in more trouble when she doesn't pay her Obamacare Penalty.

Just think of all the tax lawyers she’ll meet in the pokey. I’m sure one of them will step up and assist her.

Conservatives should be doing this too. For different reasons.

Due process is why she isn’t jail - yet.

When due process is complete and she still hasn’t paid she’ll be going to the poky...

Sheehan hm, Cindy Sheehan. That sounds like a familiar name. Didn’t she have her fifteen minutes of fame some ten years ago??

And she’s not paying her taxes? Maybe Timmy Geitner has a law degree and could represent her in tax court!

Who cares what this old commie hag, Chavez-hugger says or does? She’s old news and used goods. Even Hugo doesn’t call her anymore, other than a stupid “yanqui puta”.

Instead of her being a member of “Code Pink” (aka “Code Pinko), she should be identified as a member of “Code Red”.

I feel your pain....and then some. Was it Groucho that said he could feel just as patriotic paying half as much to the tax man?

Too bad about the IRA, too. Ouch.

No, If she keeps this up she'll go to jail. The IRS has no sense of humor. Once her shysters play out their meager hands, she's toast.

he wasn't drafted, he was an adult who volunteered to be in the military. While I sympathize for her loss, she has to get over it....he volunteered to do exactly what he did, he was an adult, he had every right not to be there, the government owes her nothing. Pay your taxes, STFU and stop seeking publicity for your own sorry ass.

How many minutes of Pannetta’s plane trips did my taxes pay for? I want a refund for that part.

I did boycott the IRS, until October anyhow. Filed for an extension. They still got there dang check. Burns me up about as much as Pannetta burns jet fuel.

Gotta pay the bills, no matter what idiot is President.

I love the fact that I can be penalized for spending my own money. It's the opposite of Obamacare, where you are penalized for not spending your own money.

I'm getting dizzy.

I am the 52%!

Cindy Sheehan, I haven’t heard of her since late 2008 right up to the election. It was kinda like a light switch. The most newsworthy person on this side of the pond and then a Democrat is elected and we hear crickets.
