The squadron changed over to the “Crusaders” from their original name—”Candystripers”—because they were the first Marine squadron to transition to the Vought F8U Crusader fighter. I’m glad they changed them back to the “Crusaders” regardless of reason, it’s a name with 50 years of history behind it for VMFA-122. Screw Mikey.

VMF-122 was originally named the Werewolves, switching to the “Crusaders” upon transition to the F-8 (which was named “Crusader”).

They reverted back to “Werewolves” several years back because of cultural sensitivities with them deploying to the Middle East. However they managed to slyly retain a lot of their “Crusaders” symbolism. Look closely at the eyes of the Werewolf that adorns the tails of their F/A-18s, for instance.
