There's no other way to put it, Mitt and Ann Romney stepped in it in their first joint network TV interview.
They fielded lots of questions during the interview which aired last night, but none more pointed then the one animal lovers were waiting for from ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer:
So why did you strap your dog to the roof of the car?
Ann Romney defended her husbands decision to put their dog, Seamus, in a crate and lash it to the roof for a 12-hour drive to Canada in 1983, saying he "loved it" and knew it meant he was going on vacation with the family.
"It was, to me, a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for, in a kennel for two weeks," she told Sawyer.
[We pause to ask ourselves two things, a) Why didn't they put some luggage on the roof and let Seamus ride inside? b) Do any of Ann Romney's $100k dressage horses ride in rusty and rickety livestock trailers exposed to elements? Ah, no.]
Asked if he do the same thing again, Mitt Romney said, Certainly not with the attention its received.
Wow. Clearly 30 years later, the Romneys still think it's ok for an animal to ride atop a car, at highway speeds no less....

Oh, BTW, the answer to the question "Why didn't they put some luggage on the roof and let Seamus ride inside?" is "Because Mitt is dumber than a bag of dog poop."
Romney puts dogs on the roof.
Obama eats them.
But did the Romenys eat Seamus?
Other RINOs make excuses for them.
I guess we know which one you are!
My uncle did this with his beloved dog for a 6-hour trip we took. The dog JUMPED up on the car to get into it, he loved that container so much. I really don’t get this controversy.
I do not doubt for one second that the dog loved it.
However, it is dangerous IMO, and I would not have put my dog there even if he asked me to.
However, even as an utterly irrational lover of dogs, I would not hold this against him or anyone else.
I would and did hold Huckabee accountable for getting his kid off after hanging a dog to death. I would have let him go to jail, and myself too likely after I beat him into the ground.
Barney Frank does./sarc
Yikes! I guess neither of them are fit to be local dog-catcher now.
where I come from it is not unusual to put your dog in the back of a pickup, untethered and travel - sometimes long distances, sometimes in the rain, sometimes at high speeds.
So, what's the big deal?
Until they passed some silly law, you would see the kids back there too!!
It was an unbelievably stupid and callous thing to do.
I will see no fewer than 5 instances of dogs riding in the backs of pickup trucks today, and it could easily be more. I don’t understand this “issue”. Is this something that shocks people up North or something? Seriously, somebody help me on this one, I don’t get it.
I’ve seen bikers (of the motorcycle variety) riding around with cats and dogs on back seats and handlebars. That being said, Romney has got problems...he can’t get through one interview without *something* going weird.
The simple answer to the question should have been..
“Well, at least we didn’t eat it!”
If this is all the liberals have to run on, Romney is a shoo in.
I don’t get it either. It’s not much different then having them ride in the back of a truck in a kennel. Which I used to do all the time when I had my truck. Of course they like being inside much more, but then they think they have to stick their heads out the window so they can get the best of both forms of travel.
My Dog rides in the BACK of the Truck especially on long trips... cause if I let her ride up front with me she either wants to stick her head out MY window or she wants to drive.
