The commander of the U.S. Pacific Command says the U.S. may launch a surgical strike against missile bases and nuclear test sites in North Korea if it conducts a third nuclear test.
Admiral Samuel Locklear explained the U.S.'s position on Tuesday at a meeting with South Korean defense journalists at the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC) in Seoul.
Locklear said Washington is closely watching the North in relation to the possibility of a third nuclear test, adding the U.S. and South Korea are looking at all options including a surgical strike.
Regarding the Norths new long-range ballistic missile unveiled on Sunday, Locklear said the U.S. will closely monitor the Norths missile development in cooperation with South Korea and other allies.
The commander added that the U.S. will maintain its military presence of about 28-thousand-500 troops in South Korea.

And don’t forget N. Korea’s partner in engineering those things: Iran.
Locklear is speaking out of turn and has NO support for this position in the WH or the Congress.
They must be getting really old. Would they really be able to fight the norks?
No worse enemies than the Japs. Pretty good friends, but if you want to get their attention you have to drop the big one. Twice.
WHY DO THAT WHEN HES GOT THE BEAST?
tough talk in an election year
nothing but politics
plus, watch for those Friday night newsdumps when Obama decides to send NK the food anyway
If the President were a Republican, this would be the instant outrageous top news story of the day. The President is a warmonger!!
but its a D...
*crickets*
You and your Dad are exactly right about how we shoulda turned MacArthur loose(r). But my 3.5 inch bazooka didn’t have any real trouble with T-34 sheet iron-—you just had to be closer than he could shoot——that’s the butt-pinching part.
I remember when we flew rice into NK. They would reject the bags with any Korean or Japanese markings. We would have to re-bag the rice in bags with Indian markings. I'm certain that the NK poeple have no idea that their two southern neighbors were feeding them.
Not going to happen. This isn’t Libya here... North Korea has far more powerful friends in the region than Gadhafy did in North Africa.
Plus, the thought of losing much of their capital city is cause for concern on the part of South Korea.
It’s just bluster...nothing more.
That is the real issue, not NK's hypothetical retaliation. We could handle that. The problem is political, not military, and we have a political traitor on the White House.
It will take the form of a strongly worded letter, maybe two.
Those letters? “O” and “K”.
Thanks No One Special.
WTF, just make an announcement that the action is considered a de-facto abrogation of the Armistace Agreement and that the United States and the United Nations (by extension) are back in active war mode against North Korea.
baloney
Just send the NORKS some food, all they have is bark and leaves to eat.
Get them stuffed on Crispy Cremes and they will just die from excess sugar.
Thanks, cherokee - My Dad is a hero to me - a real combat vet, like yourself. I’ve only READ of Task Force Smith and other Korean combat - Dad (and you) live it. I was in the 2nd ID on the DMZ in’92-’93. Nothing compared to the war. My own combat experience was on Grenada in 1983 - a VERY brief one - I’m proud of it, but it was very, very brief in comparison.
