The problem is parents not doing their jobs. That's how many of these things become police matters. However, police matters these days don't end with time in a holding cell or a dumb drunk spending the night in jail and going home the next day without charges.

If my kids act up in school, I'm telling them to call me and I'll take care of it in-house. If it's a police matter, I'm telling them to never talk to the police, and to never tell the truth or lie to the police as it will get them in big trouble. Having the police involve changes things, and IMO not for the better. I may be tough at home, but when it comes to the legal system, I will ALWAYS take my kids side. Always, because the legal system is brutal in juvenile and criminal law.

I was listening to a radio show yesterday after work. The host was talking about a case in the Sacramento, CA area where Law Enforcement went to a Middle School and collected buccal swabs from students - WITHOUT PARENT KNOWLEDGE. This happened just recently, and is in relationship with a homocide. Apparently, in California, Police can obtain DNA samples from children without notifying parents as long as the child agrees to providing the DNA.

This is completely wrong IMHO. I'm telling my children to tell their children to JUST SAY NO!
