The race for the Egyptian presidency took a dramatic turn on Saturday when the authorities disqualified front-runners including Hosni Mubarak's spy chief, a Muslim Brotherhood candidate and a Salafi preacher whose lawyer warned that "a major crisis" was looming.
The presidential election is the climax of a transition to civilian rule being led by the military council that assumed power from Mubarak on February 11, 2011 at the height of the uprising against his three decades in power.
The generals are due to hand power to the elected president on July 1.
The disqualifications add to the drama of a transition punctuated by spasms of violence and now mired in bitter political rivalries between once-banned Islamists, secular-minded reformists and remnants of the Mubarak order.
Farouk Sultan, head of the presidential election commission, told Reuters a total of 10 of the 23 candidates had been disqualified from the race. They have 48 hours to appeal.
The elimination of three of the top candidates in what is being billed as Egypt's first real presidential vote would redraw the electoral map just a few weeks before the vote gets underway in May. The election is expected to go to a June run-off between the top two candidates.

Us disqualifies presidential candidates from vote. :
Cain, Palin, Trump, Perry, Santorum, Paul, Bachman, Gingrich
Who else am I missing from the wood chipper machine count?
I live in Texas and did not get to vote for anybody yet.
Now I have a choice of a moron or a mullah.
Interesting indeed! I wonder if his mother was an American by birth or a naturalized one? Perhaps she held dual citizenship? Don’t know about Egyptian law, but usually in moslem countries, if the mother holds a foreign passport, it doesn’t carry as much weight as it would if the father did. So, I find disqualification on that ground a bit strange. Though the fact that he can apply for US citizenship, according to US law, based on his mother’s American passport, maybe more the reason why he was disqualified.
Whether the Islamists win the election or will hold the balance of power, i guess will be up to the voters.
Odds, your post eludes to the spy chief could apply for US citizenship. There is also the possible manufacturing of the Secret Service scandal which has just taken place. Hosni Mubarak's spy chief, a Muslim Brotherhood candidate is qualified to join the Secret Service? Don't know, and am asking. Not looking for tin foil, but we know Huma (Hillary's top toon) has ties to brotherhood in her family. Could this be the beginning in the zer0 administration where the Secret Service has to be discredited to bring in additional brotherhood members?
they are taking a lesson from the USA and being careful to vett candidates who will not try to destroy their country
constitutional patriots who want to represent the people are immediatly squashed by selectivly edited TV presentations and backroom deals
The middle east news guys have been covering Egypt a lot in recent weeks. It seems the original street crowd is as active as ever and ain’t taking krap from the army or even the “brotherhood “. They are serious and persistant about cleaning up corruption and getting a predictable system in place. It’s like pulling teeth but there’s hope for progress even tho a few dumbies have used Egyptian soil to take shots at Israel-—Bibi hasn’t taken it personally so far. Don’t expect to hear any progress reports from Brian Williams.
Not sure if I fully understand your point.
“Mubarak’s spy chief, a Muslim Brotherhood candidate” are 2 different people mentioned in the article. Each was disqualified apparently for different reasons.
My point was that these candidates were disqualified because they intended to run for presidency (top political office) in Egypt, therefore, presumably, must meet certain preconditions, according to Egyptian law (not US law).
Any one can apply for US citizenship or even join the Secret Service if approved by US authorities.
But, with Abu Ismail, whose mother held an American passport (already verified by US authorities, according to the article), it’d be a different story. It would mean he could automatically become a US citizen - technically, he is already there.
>>>”Could this be the beginning in the zer0 administration where the Secret Service has to be discredited to bring in additional brotherhood members?”<<<
Umm, dunno... your question assumes that there are already MB members in the Secret Service. Also, i guess, it’d depend on the purpose of bringing in “additional brotherhood members”?!
That's the first possibly positive thing I've heard yet about that situation. I believed (still pretty much do) that the MB was a sure thing and the country would become a total hellhole very rapidly. I hope to God you are right and that the good guys prevail!
From what I saw, they are trying to keep those who want to turn Egypt into an Islamic republic and those who want to bring things back to the status quo out.....which is actually a fairly intelligent decision.
The fear of terror should never turn a Free society into a Police State,I’d consider what America has turned into since 9/11 as more of a farce then anything else.
Cross-posted from another thread:
In fact, the main accusation which threatens the leading Anti-American, ultraconservative Islamist candidate Sheik Hazem Salah Abu Ismail is that his mother became an American citizen at some time before she died.
Reported evidence includes her name, Aziz Nour listed as a registered voter in Los Angeles County. Her apparent former address in Santa Monica is apparently now the location of her daughter Hanan Salah Abou Ismail, according to a April 4th article in the New York Times.
Ismails spokesman is claiming the registration may be a forgery.
If any Freepers want to help verify that the Anti-American Ismail is an ineligible hypocrite, copies of voter records can be accessed in Southern California, on the 2nd floor of the County Building at 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk CA 90650. http://www.lavote.net/
that Los Angeles county registrars office in Norwalk is where I personally witnessed voter fraud in the “early voting” at the 2008 presidential election
there were mobs of people bussed in daily for weeks standing in line getting multiple “provisional ballots” , no ID or registration required , just ask for a ballot and they hand it over to anyone in line. The lines had maybe five hundred people, it went from the second floor, down the stairs, across the courtyard, through the parking lot to the street Sheriffs were there for crowd control. I followed a guy out after voting and he got back in line and was bragging that it was his third vote for Obama that day
My thoughts exactly, we have no say in the primary candidate here and have more voters than most states that had primary votes.
