(Reuters) - Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman vetoed a proposal to restore Medicaid-funded prenatal care for illegal immigrants on Friday, but the initiative could still survive if the state legislature rejects his move next week.
Nebraska state senators voted 31-15 on Wednesday to restore the program, which was eliminated two years ago after providing prenatal care for decades.
The number of votes in favor was one more than would be needed to override the veto and the Nebraska legislature has one day left in its current session -- next Wednesday -- in which to do so.
"I oppose providing taxpayer benefits to illegal immigrants," Heineman said in his veto letter.
Heineman, who is anti-abortion, also said he had "grave concerns" that some funding could go to abortion provider Planned Parenthood and that Nebraska could become a sanctuary for illegal immigrants because no bordering states offered similar coverage.
About 1,600 low-income women were affected when Nebraska eliminated the program in 2010. About half were illegal immigrants and others were women who lost benefits for failing to comply with all requirements. Coverage was later restored for legal residents and others who do not qualify for Medicaid.
Religious, anti-abortion and health groups have called on Nebraska to restore the coverage, saying it was morally right and fiscally prudent. The state must pay for birth defects and other complications suffered by children who are U.S. citizens upon birth and qualify for taxpayer-funded health care.

This is the kind of story that will one day give me an aneurysm.
a real reading of the Constitution shows they are noot citizens upon birth.
It is neither morally right nor fiscally prudent.
The illegals' behavior in entering the United States is immoral. They are breaking the law. They game the system and appropriate our limited financial resources, thus depriving AMERICAN citizens who have worked and paid taxes to contribute to the social safety net of which these illegals are availing themselves (and helping to bankrupt).
How is it "fiscally prudent" to charge taxpayers for medical services for foreign invaders? Such programs simply encourage the next wave of invaders to sneak in.
Imagine being active duty military, being told your baby may have lymphoma, and then being told the waiting list to see a specialist at the military hospital will be several months. The private (and superior) hospitals in the city refuse to see your child, because by living in close proximity to the military hospital, your child is ineligable to receive care outside the military system (Tricare refuses to cover it). At the same time, the illegals are pouring over the border in a steady stream, walking right into the top hospitals in the area and receiving medical services for free. Our experience.
Imagine escaping Mussolini's boot, serving in the US military, following the rules to become a LEGAL citizen, and then in your golden years, watching illegals stream past you at the doctor's office because they receive preference. This is the experience of a friend of mine, and he is understandably unhappy.
What these religious groups are demanding is actually a grave injustice to American taxpayers. It's not charity when government coercion is required. Playing Robin Hood with tax dollars is the opposite of charity. It's forcibly taking money from one group to distribute it to another group. Some people might actually consider that stealing.
You're right; the activist groups should take up private collections rather than demand to be allowed to raid the public coffers in support of their cause.
You want to “teach” illegals...to not have children? They are not simple minded children.

This course would be the most effective and cheapest way to attack the illegal immigration problem. We would not even need a fence or more border patrolman. Just do not allow illegal immigrants any public benefits, medical, educational, whatever. They will leave on their own. The worst case is illegal immigrants would be single men here for menial labor, leaving the family back home. And it is the families that cost us all. So good for the governor.
How about these same churches teach illegals that repentance requires a change of heart/mind about their sins; not just simply asking forgiveness.
That it is a sin to continue in one’s sin, once it it recognized that one is sinning?
That it is a sin to disobey legally constituted temporal laws; to defraud; and so to truly repent, they must return home to apply to come back legally?
According to the story, this would cover 800 women. Can't these churches raise enough cash to give pre-natal vitamins and checkups to a mere 800 women?
