How about the SS Sultana?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Sultana

Around 1,600 US deaths. How many US folks know about that one?

Me!!!

Although I only learned about it in the last year, when I read a book about forgotten moments in history. I told my husband about it, and he’d never heard of it either. Then again, I’m the history geek in our house. I got excited yesterday when I downloaded ‘A Night to Remember’ on my Kindle for $1.99.

Hmm... Sultana? Mississippi riverboat, end of Civil War, overloaded with freed Union POWs, sloppy boiler repairs at Vicksburg, boilers exploded somewhere upstream of Vicksburg, news swamped by news of Lincoln's assassination.

Largest maritime loss of life in the US?

For more detail than that, I'd have to look it up...

I did, but shipwrecks in history are an old hobby of mine.
