ST. LOUIS Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says the United Nations should adopt a treaty giving everyone on the planet the right to bear firearms.
The GOP presidential candidate told the National Rifle Association convention Friday in St. Louis that the group has been too timid in promoting gun rights.

Newt gave a great speech at the NRA convention. He said the U.S. Constitution does not say God given rights of Americans to bear arms but rights of mankind. He said that the NRA should propose to the UN that all the people of the world should have the right to bear arms to protect themselves -- that there would be less rape, murder of children and despots and dictators who oppress and control their citizens. (He said it much better and the transcript of his speech will be posted at C-SPAN -- Speeches are still being given. Bobby Jindal just finished).
The Constitution does not "give" us rights, it says that those rights are endowed by our Creator. The Constitution is just to "secure" them.
If the U.N. tries to "give" rights, be very sure that it will come with blue helmets and enforcers.
I don’t look to the UN to give me any of my rights. They have nothing to say about what I do and don’t do and it needs to stay that way.

Newt doesn’t get it.
He should’ve said that the UN should GTF out of the US’ domestic policies.
As much as I like Newt, why does ANYONE need permission from anyone else, ESPECIALLY the Godamn U.N. to protect themselves!

You are, of course, correct.
The UN should endorse a God-given individual right to self defense (including property!), and the right of individuals to own the tools for self-defense including, but not limited to, firearms.
Still it is a pretty nice reversal on the evil bastards at the UN.

The point was well made that we have freedom because WE, Americans, can protect our God given rights. Just the opposite of Obama and his assault on the Constitution and religion.

Please take the time to understand the point that was being made. Newt was not asking U.N. permission but illustrating why we are free and other countries are not. It wasn’t directed at the U.N but rather to people enslaved around the world.
That would be hard to do after the current President took complaints against Arizona TO the United Nations.
Please don’t use God’s name in vain.

Don’t you get it? The UN considers private gun ownership to be a civil rights violation. Of course we don’t follow that. But other nations do. That’s what he’s talking about.

It is from this assertion that the 2nd Amendment flows. The Founders knew that a government which could infringe on the right to keep and bear arms could threaten these fundamental liberties of Man. Thus, the Constitution does not grant a right to keep and bear arms; the Constitution tells the government to keep its hands off a pre-existing, inherent and unalienable right that the people mean to retain.
I agree with the sentiment. Everyone on earth is entitled to self-defense.
I would not agree we need the UN to “give” rights to anyone. If anything we need to get rid of the damn UN.
So great sentiment, but not so much on implementation.
