Okay. Please explain why.

If a few hundred people had said “I’m not voting for Bush, but that’s not a vote for Gore!” in the 2000 election, Gore would have been President because Bush would have had X amount less votes to beat him with.

Which would have only hurt Bush, not magically changed them into votes for Gore. Moreover, this analogy makes the mistake that those votes were bush's to lose - no candidate automatically deserves your vote just to beat the competition.
