Who's saying that? I'm sure people are saying that voting for Romney is the only way to beat Obama, but I do not see anybody saying that voting for Romney will in any way save the conservative movement.

If "sticking with your principles" means "actively campaigning against statist Obama's opponent," then yes, that is beyond common sense.
