GREENLAND, N.H. -- The Greenland chief of police was killed and four other officers were wounded as they tried to serve a warrant Thursday at a home in a New Hampshire town near the Massachusetts border.
The shootout happened at 517 Post Road in Greenland at about 6:30 p.m. Police officers and drug agents went to the home to serve a search warrant, and that is when the incident began.
"They entered the home, and they encountered an armed subject. The armed subject fired rounds at the officers," Attorney General Michael Delaney said.
The alleged gunman spent hours barricaded inside the home with a woman, but sources told NewsCenter 5's Michele McPhee that SWAT teams entered the home and expanded their search when the gunman was not found.
Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney, who was set to retire in eight days, was killed.

Wow... Prayers up.
“I just got home with my children, and I heard some popping sound,” Hardy said. “I noticed four officers running from the house, and I saw three of them fall to the ground. It started to become such a crazy scene.”
Just checking other news reports on this sad story, I learned that police had previously gone to the home of the resident to confiscate his guns after a domestic violence charge, and saw steroids in the home. That resulted in steroid possession charges.
Learned a lot about Massachusetts reading the comments on boston.com...
Seems more and more shootings are occurring in small towns and rural areas.
I thought this only happened in big cities?
No!
Prayers sent. How tragic.
Enough of this -- ban all Massachusetts.
Now everybody knows what happens when you vote against the candidates who want to legalize drugs. Defend liberty with ballots, or your fellow citizens can and will defend liberty with bullets. The Second Amendment wasn't written for duck hunters.
Why were the police invading somebody's home? If you invade somebody's home, you should expect to get shot at. Stupid MORANS!!!!
Epic fail on this raid, the officers in charge of this raid should lose their badges.
That's just a representative sample.
RIP.
When the Hell are they going to stop trying to arrest these people in their houses? If I’m bear hunting, I don’t go into his cave. I wait until he comes out.
Seems fishy to me.. the man and woman are killed, police Chief is killed and 4 other cops are wonded.
Seems to me something was obviously done wrong.
You have got to be kidding right?
"Steroids?"
Five police officers serving a warrant for steroids?
A meth lab, maybe? But since when is being in the possession of steroids a major felony which could not have been handled by issuing a summons?
What next? Swat teams sent in when antihistamines are spotted in someones domicile?
People who sell steroids use them. Roid rage makes a person into the Hulk and can throw cops around like rag dolls.
I would have had five cops and a tranq gun. With one extra cop outside with a shotgun.
RIP to the sheriff.
Police Chief, not the sheriff died. In New England, the sheriff generally runs the jails, and excutes evictions and little else. Law enforcement is generally handled by the police. Your sentiment was fine, regardless.
“When the Hell are they going to stop trying to arrest these people in their houses? If Im bear hunting, I dont go into his cave. I wait until he comes out.”
The unfortunate response to events such as this will be to further escalate the use of force, not decrease it.
Cullen Mutrie was a POS with guns. Don’t forget to read the sidebars.
