Is the area around campus as safe as it should be?

Depends on your metric, I suppose. Whadda figger is the right number of graduate students killed per semester? One, two, ten? I like zero, which would make my answer a definite "NO!".

When people fear attempting a car jacking because car jackers are shot by their intended victims or hanged by the state, then I think the area around campus will be safe enough.

Then, it's not a metric issue but a POV issue. There'll still be people shot, but it's the bad people, not the good. The metric still exists. But I could live with this...
