Golfer Bubba Watsons plans to drive a parade lap around Phoenix International Raceway in the original General Lee car from the show "The Dukes of Hazzard" before the March 4 Sprint Cup Series race have been scrapped, according to Jim Utter of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. The problem is "the Confederate flag image" on the roof of the car. NASCAR Managing Dir of Integrated Marketing Communications David Higdon on Friday said, "NASCAR, International Speedway Corp. and Phoenix International Raceway officials discussed this and decided it was not in the best interest of our sport. He added, "The image of the Confederate flag is not something that should play an official role in our sport as we continue to reach out to new fans and make NASCAR more inclusive" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/18). Watson said, NASCAR was built on moonshining, so the show was built on moonshining. I thought it was fun. I didnt buy the car to get publicity; I bought it because I love it (AP, 2/17). YAHOO SPORTS Jay Busbee wrote the decision is going to rile up hardcore fans, but so be it. NASCAR has to play to a larger fanbase now (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 2/17).
It would be great if all PROUD Americans, who eschew political correctness, would do the same.
I’m not from the South. :)
As a Northerner from a family that never had a dog in that fight, I have never completely understood how that flag has been transformed from an interesting historical artifact to the equivalent of a white sheet with holes in it - in only 30 or 40 years.
At this rate, I’ll bet in five years it will be edited/blurred out of films and videos.
Me neither....I'm from Ohio
These are real fans, not wimps and wusses.

Yep, took out Winston and replaced it with Nextel. I went to Daytona when it was still the Winston Cup and still have my Winston Tower admission. Went several years later as Nextel. I thought I was at the mall. The distancing of tobacco sponsorships, IMHO was the start of the end of regional identity. I think. I do remember receiving 2 cartons of a Winston finest from the hospitality tent hosted by Champion.. I thought that was interesting as 14 year old kid , (1984). Brought that stuff back to NJ and made $20. My pop did not appreciate the entrepreneurial opportunity this parented in HS, nor did the admins. Different times I guess, smoking was allowed on school grounds.
I was born in lovely Cleveland. While my parents were alive, I thanked them often for having the good sense to move to SoCal when I was 5.
I can remember smoking was allowed IN school during school hours.
The problem is that their income stream has already been interrupted - in a big way. the Great Øbozo Misery tour is hitting NASCAR just like everyone else. They can ill afford to alienate their base - folks who like the General Lee and don't mind or care about that flag.

The people who hate the confederate flag will still call nascar racist regardless of what they do.The dumbasses running the show in nascar need to wake up to this,Its idiotic.I suppose nascar should make all the drivers wear hoodies instead.
I agree, the General Lee is a part of history whether you like it or not. I was a kid when the show started- could care less about the flag and do not find it offensive whatsoever.
What I find offensive is when they play the Mexican national anthem at a US soccer game
Replace the stars and bars with a hammer and sickle, and the media would adore and applaud him.
Thx for the new desktop wallpaper... : D
In baseball, when Toronto plays, they play the Canadian and our national anthem. If it is a team from Mexico playing a US team, I have no problem with both national anthems. I suspect, however, you are talking about two US teams on our soil. That is truly disgusting.
What's next, black bars covering the redacted parts of the school books?
If they do teach history, they do not do it very well. It is all about their leftist agenda.
