Newt Gingrich Issues Statement on Santorums Departure, Tells Mike Huckabee Hell Finally Get to Be 1-on-1 With Romney
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just on the Mike Huckabee Radio show, and commented on Santorum suspending his own presidential campaign just moments ago. On the show, Gingrich discussed finally getting to be 1-on-1′ with Romney, how he will campaign going forward, and a possible debate in North Carolina with the current front-runner.
Below are some highlights from Huckabees interview with Gingrich:
I did not get a heads up in advance. We have been talking for two weeks, and I knew this was a real possibility in his mind. I do know that he had begun to realize that when you are up against all of Wall Street, it is very difficult. The money machine makes it difficult to have a competitive race.
I am not focused on going after Romney; I want to focus on the issues and Barack Obama. I will admit it was a slugging match in Florida; people who like me dont want me down in the gutter. We will see what Governor Romney decides. I am going to focus on the Republican platform and why Obama is a grave threat to this country.
Our folks are making calls to undecideds and those for Rick [Santorum]; we have been talking to someone in North Carolina, and there may be a debate [...] between Romney and me. I would like to have an open dialogue just the two of us, a chat.
Here is the full statement released by Gingrichs press secretary:

I suppose in the interests of full disclosure I ought to add that I attend church with one of the World Magazine staff members who is definitely not a Gingrich supporter.
Trying to convince evangelicals to support Newt Gingrich is going to be very difficult, but as South Carolina showed, it's not impossible.

I understand how much of a long shot this is, but speaking as a Santorum supporter until today, I see no choice left for evangelicals but to vote for Newt Gingrich.
What are we facing with a Romney nomination? At best, we're going to get Supreme Court picks like David Souter and Sandra Day O'Connor. More likely, we're going to see a repeat of 2008 and 1996 with McCain and Dole. Mitt Romney, who is already signaling his desire to “move to the center,” is likely to follow Dole and McCain in antagonizing the Republican base and thereby losing the election to a much worse Democrat.
At least we can say that Dole and McCain were legitimate war heroes, and were more or less pro-life through their political careers. Romney is far worse. Are we aware that Romney not only presided over the legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts, but actually selected two homosexual judges out of his 36 judicial picks, and that the vast majority of his judicial picks were registered Democrats or independents who were contributors to Democratic candidates?
Abortion is a core issue for me. So is national defense. I am painfully aware of the problems with Newt Gingrich, but at least on those two issues, nobody can make a serious argument that Gingrich isn't an opponent of baby killers and Islamofascism.
BRAVO! well said:)
I’m stealing your post for a pro Newt facebook site. Thanks for the info CW
Great post SatinDoll. Spot on!
God bless Rick Santorum and his family for bringing the fight to the Romney machine. Prayers for the Newt campaign in the coming primaries.
Thanks katiedidit1!
Anita and I wish Rick and Karen and the entire Santorum family heartfelt congratulations for a tireless and hard-fought campaign. We know the toll the process takes on the candidates and their families, as well as the honor of being in the arena fighting to keep America great and strong. We are keeping their precious Bella in our prayers and we wish Rick, Karen and their family the best in their future together.
Governor Perry will strongly endorse and work for the Republican nominee, since our priority must be to replace President Obama and his destructive policies. As a former U.S. military officer and a proud Aggie, Rick Perry puts a premium on loyalty and therefore today remains Newt Gingrich backer.

Rick has waged a remarkable campaign. His success is a testament to his tenacity and the power of conservative principles.
That one statement insists that I vote for Newt. You guys have no idea how happy Newt makes me with that statement. Oh and I am a Pennsylvania resident and vote in that primary. After all this time of arguing with Newt Supporters results in my voting for Newt....how ironic. I am happy to vote for Newt in Pennsylvania.
Still bashing Santorum? I do believe that Santorum was born in the United States and had every right to run for President. Are you jealous that you can’t run because you wouldn’t get a single vote with your nastiness?
Sorry but your hero Romney is going to LOSE in November regardless. Bashing Santorum is not going to help your crush Romney. It is the hair isn’t it?
Disgusting. What a whore (sorry for the language) but that is what he is. I don’t remember when Rick Perry endorsed Newt....was it the day he suspended or a day later? I am hoping that Rick will endorse Newt and it is not too late. If Santorum endorses Newt the week before Pennsylvania (next week), it would be VERY effective even better than if Rick endorsed Newt yesterday. Go Newt!!!!
Santorum has made a number of statements that lead me to believe that deep down he is a very petty person who lacks the temprament to be president. That’s why I have occasionally called him “little Ricky”. Today’s announcemnet refusing to even mention Romney is just the most recent example. If that’s bashing, so be it. I stand by it.
Thank you for the info on where Rick Perry stands now.
Texas should get very interesting.
Santorum did, the same thing he always did.. this is all par for the course for the guy.
Why people would honestly believe an elected incumbent lost an election by 17 points didn’t get sent packing for good reason by his constituents is beyond me.
“Who quit today?”
The one with character - the ONLY one with character.
“The one with character - the ONLY one with character.”
I would have voted for him if he would have won, many on FR would have voted for him if he would have stayed in and won.
But he quit. It doesn’t speak well of his “Character”.
AND I am truly sorry he did.
