Whenever I see someone wearing a fraternity sweater or talking about their fraternity I always wonder what go awful thing did they do to become a member.

Were they using the pledges as rat bait?

“I always wonder what go awful thing did they do to become a member. “

It pales in comparison to what you have to do to join the military.
I’m a faculty adviser for a fraternity. Most of the hazing comes from the pledges themselves. They want to do something that makes them stand out so they can say “We had it much worse than you guys”. We frown on paddles but the pledges want them for their walls.

The worst thing the brothers do is make them wear a tie once a week. They act like they are being tortured.
The best thing that they are required to have a higher GPA than campus and the highest GPA frats get the best pledges.

Highest GPA last year : Zeta Beta Tau(Zion Bank & Trust), the Jewish house.

Not all fraternities haze physically. My hell week was 95% mental (lack of sleep, psy ops, etc.) versus physical. I was never once hit or struck in any form or fashion. I was so tired by the end of the week that I am pretty sure that I hallucinated (no drugs, alcohol, etc.) but that was about it.
