We noted days after the Japanese earthquake that the biggest threat was from the spent fuel rods in the fuel pool at Fukushima unit number 4, and not from the reactors themselves...

Plain old garden variety hyperbole.
It may be a threat to those nearby but anyone who declares it to be a threat to humanity is an idiot.
Folks, if youre blessed enough to have income, and youre using FR but not donating to keep it on line, youre riding in the cart while others are pulling it.
Take one minute out of your busy FReeping and set up a monthly donation. Even $5 helps, you probably wont even notice it and if you do, youll feel good about it.
$5 a month for FR? A bargain at twice the price!!!
There is now no protection to that area and a large quake on the southern half of the triple junction would be world impacting if indeed anyone of the reactor building but indeed the spent fuel pool storage of Reactor 4.
There is a load value on that triple junction that local seismologists are very weary of.
It is any area to watch but then again on a volcanic note....look towards Columbia for the next story....!

Maybe we just have to nuke them again.
LOL....yeah I am not a fan of the Full moon theory but again....there is something brewing....from the Askja lake in Iceland to some crazy quake action along the Cocos Plate....So this weekend is prime for an impactful event.
They did a great job of Nuke’n themselves...!
Here's three from the article:
Ambassador Muratas letter says:
It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of Japan and the whole world depends on NO.4 reactor. This is confirmed by most reliable experts like Dr. Arnie Gundersen or Dr. Fumiaki Koide.
If the other 1200+ nuclear detonations that have taken place didn’t kill us, some radioactive water on the other side of the planet isn’t likely to do us in no matter how much unrelated bullcrap you want to bring into it.
Nah I would not go as far as to say “end of planet” type headline pimping speak but the scenario is real enough to where it could ruin a few days worldwide.
That my FRiend is the truth.
Sounds like a Star Trek episode or a Frank Herbert SCI-FI novel.
Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137 roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP). The total spent reactor fuel inventory at the Fukushima-Daichi site contains nearly half of the total amount of Cs-137 estimated by the NCRP to have been released by all atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, Chernobyl, and world-wide reprocessing plants (~270 million curies or ~9.9 E+18 Becquerel).
I noticed they like to use F-words a lot. :)
And former vice president of the United States of America says the core of the earth is several million degrees.
I’m not impressed by morons with titles.
NOT a fair comparison my FRiend... ;)
Yes but...but...a bit of radioactive water is how we got GODZILLA! He'll kill us all, you fool! And then Mothra!
I’m sticking a turtle in the microwave as we speak.
