Four days before the holiest time of the year for Christians, CNN.com actually asked, "How ethical is your Easter basket?"
This was the headline for the video of a CNN Newsroom segment Wednesday about child slaves being used to harvest cocoa in West Africa.
SUZANNE MALVEAUX, CNN ANCHOR: All right. So before you start buying the Easter chocolate this weekend, something you should consider, is it contributing to child slavery. Turns out that most of the world's cocoa fields are in West Africa. Hundreds of thousands of children are forced to work in those fields. David Mattingly takes us to one of the farms in Ivory Coast.
CNN should consider ALL of the facts and circumstances.
Yes, children work almost as slaves on the cocoa plantations harvesting cocoa beans for chocolate.
But they also live in the third world. Has CNN ever considered what would happen to these children if they were not working? They would go hungry and their lives would be poorer for the lack of work.
If you do not purchase chocolate and, in effect, boycott the chocolate industry, then you will probably be contributing to the deaths of these children.
The world is a harsh place and children grow old faster outside of our borders. Be thankful your children are here.
Muslims good, Christians bad. Get with the “progressive” program.
Easter is a good time to remember the Christian soldiers who died so that we don’t have to pray to Mecca five times a day.
I’d rather not buy chocolate that is produced by slave labor.
I also prefer to buy American rather than Chinese when possible because of ethical qualms about labor, copyrights and untrustworthy ingredients.
We still use Cadbury, but there is also Nestle, Hershey, Dove and Lindt mixed in there. It’s not a perfect world, but on Easter it is a sweet one. : )

Looks like Cadbury, Nestle, and Dove chocolate also use child slave labor ingredients to make their chocolate. There probably is no such thing as child slave labor free chocolate.
Good effing grief. We’re supposed to feel guilty about everything. How about the shoes and clothing we wear,,,probably made in sweat shops in Asia.
The cultural aspects are completely lost on stupid liberals (redundant). It’s perfectly normal in many cultures for children to start contributing to the welfare of the family as soon as they are able. Look at U.S. farms for instance.
If we were to follow the premise that CNN is presenting and cease all consumption of products from these countries one of two things is going to happen; either they find another market or they end up in a worse situation than they were before we became so “concerned” for their welfare because now, they can’t make any money to feed their families.
Leftists just can’t process this, their “logic” is so twisted as to be completely idiotic to the average, thinking person.
Can’t enjoy a cup of coffee or teaspoon of sugar. Made with child slave labor.

How the heck are those African field workers supposed to fill their bellies if we boycott their chocolate?
In this instance, yes and I’m not ok with slavery.
But in general? I take CNN’s “reporting” with a grain of salt and I view it as preparatory to other “follow-on” reports designed to support legislation or edicts such as the one recently passed down by the DOL about farming in the US.

Call me a cynic, but they’ve (CNN and other LSM outlets) EARNED my disdain.
C’mon people....Easter is not about chocolate or bunnies or eggs!!! It’s about Christ’s death, burial and ressurection.
Now that I think of it, Mexico produces chocolate. I just haven’t seen chocolate candy from there. It’s just been chocolate for (muy rico) hot cocoa.
(An off-topic rant— One of the things that is so exasperating about Mexico: they have petroleum, gold, silver, copper, iron, two coastlines, Vanilla, Chocolate, coffee, tequila, beaches, delicious and plentiful food, and yet they still have a lot of poverty.)
You are correct. Easter is about Christ’s resurrection. That is why our family puts church first.
After that, we relax, enjoy the Joy of Easter, and consume immoderate quantities of God-given treats. Since the latter does require a little advance preparation, it is not out of line to have a discussion about it. It doesn’t necessarily mean we have our priorities out of whack.
