Lugar used nearly $15K in taxpayer money for hotel stays
The Indianapolis Star ^ | April 2, 2012 | Heather MacWilliams

Posted on 04/02/2012 5:21:24 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

After looking at their records, Lugar’s staff found that he erroneously billed taxpayers $4,500 in hotel stays. However, a US Senate investigation, initiated by Lugar, found the number to be three times higher.

“He’s paid that back with a personal check and resolved it,” said Fisher.

Or is it resolved?

Raju said this, coupled with the fact that Lugar has not maintained a residence in Indiana since 1977, could damage his political future.

“This is the first time it’s really come to hit him this hard," said Raju.

Champange wishes and caviar dreams for the Senior RINO Senator from Indiana. It’s up to Hoosier conservatives to put his vacation to an end.

"..... Lugar has not maintained a residence in Indiana since 1977...."

Wouldn't he have been wise to at least rent a storage unit in Indiana?

Then, when the taxpayer reimbursement check never shows we could watch his unit go to auction on Storage Wars...

Thanks Clintonfatigued. But our top story -- Republican Richard Lugar initiates an investigation on himself and finds he spent a lot of money over a period of years.

“Wouldn’t he have been wise to at least rent a storage unit in Indiana?”

I think that’s what he actually did. But he never used it.

If he were aO-Bama he would have charged every penny he spent on himself, his family (think his morther-in-law is getting paid for babysitting his daughters?) and friends spent during the last 17 years to the taxpayers, including the money that that Chicago hospital paid that bovine hipped wife of his for a politically padded dollar position of hers.

On the other hand he's personally incredibly wealthy.

Remembering that Lugar is one of the senior Republican Senators, if they retake the Senate he will get his choice of a prime committee chairmanship.

If, on the other hand, he loses in the upcoming primary somebody else will get that prime committee chairmanship.

Typically states seek to keep their senior senators in office forever to BRING IN THE FAVORABLE TREATMENT!

To give you a sense of how that works let's say you were Senator Douglas in Illinois and you wanted to stifle Indiana's commercial development of its limited Lake Michigan waterfront and enhance Chicago's. He, Douglas, while the 25th ranking Senator, definitely outscored Vance Hartke at 68 and Birch Bayh at 91!

Consequently Douglas got the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore enacted.

If the rankings had been the reverse, much of Chicago North and South of the Loop would have been reconfigured as the site of the even higher more widespread dunes that'd been knocked over a century before.

Currently Richard Lugar, as nasty as he may be is the third most senior Senator. Presuming Republicans can feed capable people into his staff, this guy could be exceedingly valuable as long as they can keep his drooling to a minimum, and if necessary, his wheelchair wheels greased.

If he's taken out in the primary ~ you'll see McConnell advance in Republican ranks to a position where Indiana is liable to see another National Shoreline pop up along the Ohio, with no new bridges!

As everyone here knows I'm not a Lugar supporter by any means, but that's why Senate seniority is important, and Lugar would be the highest ranking Republican Senator. I'd hope his staff is prepared to move on relocating the Lake Michigan National Seashore to Chicago (at the least).

It will be very difficult for Republican voters to remove Lugarn simply because it'd be like shooting their right foot off ~ or worse!.

Your post goes a long way to explain why Washington DC is the cesspool that it is, and why as the Joker said, “What this town needs is an enema.”

The Senate seniority system is certainly a big part of the problem. Alas, any time they've ever had to correct it they haven't really had quality members anyway.

Maybe if we converted the Senate from a voting part of the Congress to an advisory panel, simply revised the rules on when the next elections tae place, and we could barge ahead like the Parliamentary democracies.

Of course they get the same smarmy politicians we do so maybe that's not a good idea.

On the other hand, Sen. Dick Lugar is incredibly wealthy as well as being a doddering POS RINO. Time to retire this dinosaur, Indiana.

I didn’t know R. Lugar lacks an IN address, and I suspect the Hoosiers haven’t a clue about that either. Hoosiers thinks the law requires them to reelect Lugar ad nauseum.

Lugar has been a jerk for years. This is just another example of the stupid American voter. Another two examples are Romney and Obama.

Your 20 most senior Senators are all doddering POS"S. Been that way for CENTURIES!

He ain't that special ~ just the senior most Republican Senator, and as I said about the drooling, just keep it to a minimum and the staff should pick up all the goodies!

BTW, when it comes to loot, being the Senior Senator of the ruling party is worth far more to the homefolks than being President for Two Terms!

Without Carl Hayden Arizona would be a desert wonderland. Without Richard Russell, Atlanta would be a quaint small city in the Southern Appalachian piedmont. Without Harry Byrd, West Virginia would consist entirely of coal mines. James Eastland turned Mississipp into a major Sea Power and brought jobs to the state that required reading and writing ~ and don't tell me ""at ain't so", 'cause everybody knows it.

Lugar has a family farm in southern Indiana that his family has owned for about 100 years....that will do for a voting address
