Newt in Autumn
National Review Online ^ | March 30, 2012 | Robert Costa

Posted on 04/02/2012 9:21:33 AM PDT by true believer forever

Haley understands why many politicos interpret Gingrich’s maneuvers as a retreat. Haley’s job, as he sees it, is to keep the campaign in survival mode until then — out of debt, in the news, and prepared for a floor debate.

“We clearly have an opportunity to win,” Haley says. “Now, it’s clear from the delegate math that we have an almost impossible hurdle. But we also believe that Romney will have a very difficult time reaching the necessary 1,144 delegates he needs to be the nominee. If the Republican National Committee follows its rules regarding Florida and Arizona, Romney will probably not be able to get there by June.”

As Romney and Santorum sling arrows at each other, “Newt will continue to make his case to the public,” Haley says. In the coming days, he will unveil more “policy solutions,” hoping to catch fire on a variety of issues, much in the way his “Newt = $2.50 gas” has generated enthusiasm from conservatives and scorn from the White House. Haley predicts that delegates will be paying close attention even if the Beltway press largely ignores Gingrich’s agenda.

It won’t be easy, Haley acknowledges, but he refuses to accept the conventional wisdom that Gingrich is finished. “In an environment where Newt is seen as the leading voice of the conservative movement, as the only candidate who wants to offer a true alternative to the president, he could rise,” Haley says.

“I see this as a Moneyball scenario,” Haley says, comparing the tumultuous, drawn-out primary to the Michael Lewis best-seller about managing a major-league baseball team. “Over the course of a 162-game season, you do the stats and you can predict a likely outcome. But when the postseason comes, it’s a smaller sample size,” he says.

For Newt supporters, this is the moment. The moment for people with vision, for those born to the dig down deep, to go forth day after day with only faith and self-motivation to bind them. This is the hill to die on, to drill down, and do it, no matter how impossible it seems, no matter how much it will cost. It's time to save a country in spite of itself...

I’ll stand with Newt until he stands down. This is possibly the most Quixotic political quest I’ve seen in my adult lifetime - The Impossible Dream. But, as long as Newt still believes it’s even remotely possible to stop Romney, it just might be.

i believe in Newt.

but in CT, I’ll likely be voting Santorum. to keep mmitt from getting a sweep. The treshold in CT is 20%, with a 50% winner-take-all rule. So RS will get his 20%, Newt could keep mR under the 50% level.

this is the text of an email I got from a pastor in CT last week. He is working very hard for Newt, and has prepped this strategy for CT... I will be talking to him sometime this evening if we can connect, but if you would like to participate with him, I can send you his email and phone in CT.

"I decided last night that I am sick and tired of all the Establishment Folks who really are NOT like us giving Obama another 4 years. Newt is the ONLY Candidate that can logically beat Obama and here's why: I personally believe that the Democrats orchestrated a Health Care Bill that would be tossed out because they did not put a Severability Clause in it. Think about it for one moment, do you really think that Obama, the Democrats and the legal scholars that wrote that ObamaCare really omitted it in error? That makes no sense.

While I personally am opposed to Barack Obama's policies, I think he is a brilliant politician intent on winning re-election. For that reason, I personally am convinced that ObamaCare is positioned to be Obama's number one re-election issue. I can just hear him now "These Republicans don't care about your health. They have stacked the Court with Justices that want to see you denied medical care. We must change that."

Now think about it: Who is best positioned to argue against Obamacare: Romney who wrote RomneyCare, which ObamaCare was mirrored after?, Santorum who frankly can not seem to validate any position whatsoever sustainable against Obama? Newt the MASTER of all debates and logical solutions? or Paul who although offers unrealistic change and simply can not relate to the people with these extreme positions. Obviously it is Newt and make no mistake: OBAMACARE is the most important issue in United States History!

So the long and the short of it is this. I believe that We the People are the only ones that can get Newt elected. I have a simple strategy but I need help.

The Strategy is this: Win the election one vote at a time. To do this we need to undertake a huge task, which is to identify our supporters and get them to vote. Here in CT, we are dealing with about 150,000 likely Republican Voters. We have decided to identify the voters from the towns that had the best voter turn out (over 40%) and we need help. I am asking you to make a commitment of 5, 10, or 20 minutes a day making either 5, 10 or 20 calls a day keeping track of Newt supporters and ultimately getting them to vote on Primary day, which is April 24, 2012. We will give you the names and numbers, but we need REAL PEOPLE who ARE COMMITTED to do this.

If you can make a commitment to do this and perhaps find 5 other people to do the same, I believe Newt can cause and upset here in CT and then we'll move on to the next State. I am tired and I am not waiting for some miracle worker to figure out whats wrong here. We are the miracle workers! If Newt wins 3 more states, he will be on the floor for the first vote. As it stands Newt can only be considered after the first round of voting at the convention (which would be Romney and Santorum first at this time). This is my opinion: The strategy is simple: Keep Romney from getting 1000 committed delegates (because anything less than 1000 will be difficult for him to find 144 for the first round of delegate voting at the convention) and work to get Newt 3 more States. CT is small but it is within striking reach if we get out the vote."

if your pastor is not aware of the 20% threshold rule in CT ... his strategies don’t mean much.

Newt won’t get 20% because I doubt he will campaign here. so i am sure you understand how his votes do not count on allocating delegates as he would be under the threshold.

For Newt supporters... he's helping Mitt Romney after all, he fooled all of you.

He was in Maryland today, and this is what he had to say :
Newt says he won't drop out until Romney reaches the 1144 mark, so he's in it to help Mitt Romney and hoping that Romney will adopt a Gingrich platform...

Newt is over. Had Romney lost in MI and/or OH, he would have been finished. Gingrich’s campaign has been worse than quixotic, it has given us Romney. Indeed Romney supporter, Dick Morris said so much on FoxNews today that if Gingrich had quit after FL, Santorum may have given Romney a run for his money. On Super Tuesday ace FoxReporter Carl Cameron reporter that Team Romney was “happy” to have Gingrichian continue because he was dividing the anti-Romney vote.

Now Romney is off to Tampa like a traveling salesman to attempt to influence the platform after winning just 2 states and coming in with 7%-8% of the vote in some of the major primary contests. This has been a Gingrich fiasco. Sadly, he let down his followers who were taken to the edge and over the cliff.

Get a grip, why don’t you. Santorum has more to do with Romney being the potential nominee than Newt ever could, as Santorum has been riding a delusional wave of evangelical support and nothing more, which was sure to collapse and is collapsing. And, yes, we Newt supporters TOLD YOU SO!! At least Newt is looking out for conservative principles; as per norm, Sanctimonium is only thinking about himself. Wake Up!!

Don’t even try. Rick Santorum is the one who rode a delusional wave of evangelical support because ‘God called him to do this...’ he was and is ill-prepared, unvetted, gaffe-prone, corrupt and sanctimonious. He scared women back to barama. but now, because Dick Morris said so (you’re kidding, right)... because Dick Morris said so it’s all Newt’s fault... You Santorum supporters are atleast reliably uninformed and lazyminded.

Newt has said several times that Romney needs to earn the nomination, and when he does that, he deserves the support of the party. Both Newt and Santorum have agreed they will support romney if he is the nominee, and the bar for that is reaching the magic 1144 delegates. What is so earth-shattering about that? Try the truth, it works, and often has power of its own.

Just a few facts, truth and perspective regarding where Newt is and what he is saying today, to offset the blatant untruths and hyperbole from certain pathetic people, who shall remain nameless, regarding the same subject on this thread...

Frederick, Md. - Newt Gingrich says the finish line for Mitt Romney’s path to the GOP nomination is further down the road than what current delegate counts indicate.

The longshot hopeful, who has said he won’t get out of the race until Romney secures 1144 delegates, is stressing that the delegates have to be “uncontested” in order to count. The frontrunner’s rivals argue some of the states that awarded Romney all of their delegates violated Republican National Committee rules when they moved their contests ahead of April 1 and therefore should distribute delegates proportionally. This dispute, if it continues, would not be ruled on until the August convention in Tampa.

“All the media counts right now give him all of Florida, which is against the rules, all of Arizona, which is against the rules, and all of Idaho,” Gingrich said Monday. “Those are all three proportional states and they should only be counting his share. So he has to win 1,144 uncontested delegates.”

The audience that had gathered to see him at the auto dealership here in Maryland was loud and enthusiastic, but Gingrich admitted that the odds he’ll be the nominee are slim.

“I can’t tell you today how realistic it is that we will get to an open convention and I can’t tell you today with any certainty that I will be the nominee,” he said. “But I can tell you a couple things. Despite 6 years of campaigning, $40 million dollars of his own money, millions raised from Wall Street - largely from people who got our tax money from the bailout - Governor Romney doesn’t have it locked down. And we have no obligation to back off and concede anything until he does.”

Gingrich reiterated that he would back Romney if he were to clinch all 1144 delegates, but until then, “Callista and I will both be going to Tampa, because we are going to fight for a conservative platform.”

Current polls indicate Romney is ahead in Wisconsin, Maryland, and DC, which all hold their contests tomorrow. As an indication that his campaign does not expect to do well, Gingrich currently has no public events scheduled for Tuesday.

Having restrained his attacks against his rivals last week, Gingrich resumed an offensive stance. Once again bringing up Romney advisor Eric Fehrnstrom’s Etch A Sketch comments last month, Gingrich tried to paint the candidate as someone whose political platform would change at the whim of his consultants.

“The last thing I want to see is a campaign this fall by a group of clever consultants, the people who advised Bob Dole in 1996 and John McCain in 2008,” Gingrich said. “You can’t run a campaign with no principles and win the United States. You are not going to beat Barack Obama by being clever.”

“Delusional wave”? Heck Santorum won 11 states and gave Romney a scare for his life in his home state of MI and came within a whisker of beating Romney in OH, while Gingrich comes in 3rd or dead last in primary contests. And you don’t think you were all taken for a ride now that Gingrich is going to Tampa as a traveling salesman to “influence” the party platform with only two states in his bag?
