There is growing talk that if former House Speaker Newt Gingrich drops out of the race and "suspends" his campaign, he may throw his support behind Rick Santorum in an effort to deny Mitt Romney the GOP nomination.
And, for the moment, Gingrich is not yielding to the slew of establishment endorsements for Mitt Romney.
Gingrich told CBS News' "Face the Nation" Sunday that Romney has no lock on the nomination and the math doesn't show him getting the 1,144 delegates easily to clinch the nomination.
A leading Gingrich campaign official also suggested this weekend that their camp may work with Santorum to stop Romney from getting the nomination as the former House Speaker made clear he could back either Santorum or Romney if they were to win the nomination.
"If Rick Santorum becomes the nominee, I'll help him," Gingrich said. "We are all committed to defeating Barak Obama. We think his re-election would be a disaster for the country."
Santorum offered a similar sentiment about Romney's difficulty in getting the required delegates.
On Sunday's "Meet the Press," Santorum scoffed at the idea that Romney has the nomination.
"Right now, he's not there," he said, adding, "He's not even close to it."
This past weekend, Gingrich's Wisconsin state campaign director, Robert Lorge, suggested that Gingrich and Santorum may work together to gain control of the Republican convention.
"Lorge is of the school of thought that Romney wont make the cut, and moving forward, there will be a highly contested battle for delegates," Fox News reported.
Newts the only candidate that realizes this battlefield is almost done, but the coming battlefield is the convention, Lorge said.

This is the thing only left. Unless they want to try to force a brokered convention but they may not get to it because Romney could win it all at anytime.
“Your goal is to alienate Newt supporters, correct?”
No need to do that. FRingrichers have done a pretty good job of self-alienation, alienating themselves from just about everyone in the world except their darling Newtie.
“santorum is week and will do or say what ever he thinks the msm wants him to.”
Yea, but he’s not quite the Etch a Sketch Romney is.
Thanks for letting me know that should Santorum win the nomination, he doesn’t want our votes. Or is it just you?
Give me a break. I’m sick of the kind of gloating posts I see on this thread and others, regardless of which candidate one supports. Santorum supporters are just as guilty as Newt supporters.
Baloney. You don’t have to go any further than post #2 and #10 here to see what we have had pushed about Santorum here. BTW, can you point to how my post is “gloating”?
Gloating:
present participle of gloat
Verb:
Contemplate or dwell on one’s own success or another’s misfortune with malignant pleasure: “his enemies gloated over his death”.
I was stating a fact that the Newt people here consider Rick some sort of Big Govt’ Socialist and take every opportunity to state it. Feel free to find the same sort of angry vitriol about Newt from the Santorum people. You won’t.
Not a popular thing to say here on FR, but I completely agree with you. Obama would slaughter Santorum. Hes extremely dull, he is not careful with his words, and his voting record is not as conservative as some would lead you to believe. Though I do think his wife would make a wonderful First Lady but he will never make it that far for us to see that happen.
Newt knows that Santorum couldn’t beat Obama. He’s taking the opportunity to appear cooperative.
Obama will slaughter Rick and the media will slaughter Milt. so what else is new from the repubican power elites? Until We The People conservative unelect a mass of the oligarchically inclined bastards we will continue to get this sort of manipulation. You might wonder whom it is that directs the pubbies from behind their scenes, whom it is who pulls their collective strings?
Believe as you wish. I have better things to do.
he needed to do that in Michigan if he was serious
I’m sure he’d be glad to have your vote and the votes of all FRingrichers.
The only trouble is that the FRingrichers have pretty loudly and clearly said that they despise him so much that they’d never vote for him. Those who say they prefer Newt but would vote for Santorum are not what I mean by FRingrichers.
But there are an awful lot of FRingrichers who have made it pretty darn clear that they’d never vote for Santorum
That’s what the word “alienate” means. Exactly what it means. And they are the ones who self-declared their alienation.
If you are not one of them, wonderful.
