If the Left says we should believe everything Islamists say, then why won't they believe them when they say that Islam is both state and religion? I believe the term is "cognative dissonance"; when a person is faced with facts that refute their beliefs, that person often ignores facts in favor of belief.
I confess that I cannot explain everything I observe in terms of my religious beliefs, but in that particular case the harm I can inflict on the world (if I am wrong) is very limited. Leftists in power have the opportunity to destroy the country.

Despite being predictably measured and guarded, thus far, in his public statements, and reported attitudes, even the New York Times conceded that Al-Shater supports "an explicitly Islamic government." ... Moreover, the Times acknowledges Al-Shater's active promotion of "undemocratic" tendencies... For that lying liberal elite organization to admit to anything that doesn't support their stupid preconceived notions is news. The guy must be the reincarnation of Hitler for them to notice.

“Islam is both state and religion”
And you can add law and legal system. This is why I do not believe it is protected by our first amendment. You cannot protect a religion that is inseparable from a system designed to undermine the Republic.
