The political abuse of psychiatry and its employment as a weapon of state power was a central fact of life in the Soviet Union. If you haven't done so before, you may wish to read about the Serbsky State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry and how it was used against dissidents during the 1960s and by some accounts, right up until the collapse of the USSR.

It is particularly chilling to read of purposeful misdiagnoses of mental disorders (in particular, schizophrenia) by medical professionals, descriptions of which might remind you of words we've heard from some of Obama's "Czars" (no small irony there).
