The US is sending an amphibious assault group and a couple of thousand US Marines to the Persian Gulf. With another US carrier making its way to Iran's doorstep, US military still insist that this is a "regularly scheduled deployment".
The Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group is comprised of amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, amphibious transport dock USS New York, and amphibious dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall. It is also reinforced with an atomic submarine and a marine helicopter squadron.
The group, which is "a versatile sea-based force that can be tailored to a variety of missions," left port on Tuesday and is heading to the Gulf, the US Navy says.

Hussein’s “October Surprise”?
Given that the current occupant of 1600 PA Ave is either a closet Muslim or an atheist/muslim-sympathizer, “No”.
Too small for any significant operation, and it is routine anyway. Such a unit is normally deployed with every US fleet.
It must be time for a little “Acting Presidential” and showing “Presidential Machismo” to distract the masses from Zero’s treasonous remarks with the Russians.
Very likely. Against a weak leftwing Bishop Willard candidate who would have to say he supported a demonstration of force over there, it would work well.
Ummm - what happened to the Administration’s bare bones yet Miltary budget? Should we be high-tailing it into yet another Middle Easter incursion?
What does that mean now, w?
in terms of the characterization of what the facts mean, just consider the source - Russia Today
Obama is going to get a lot of our people killed. The left will celebrate.
so he thinks boots on the ground in Iran is a good idea?
The Navy is doubling our minesweepers in the Persian Gulf to 8 and also sending in more mine hunting helicopters.
The Navy is also refitting the USS Ponce to deploy to the Persian Gulf to be a full time Mine Warfare Command Ship.
These are expensive complicated deployments and are described as “setting the theater” to counter any potential Iranian threat. Hmmm.

This strikes me as routine given the circumstances.
Seems like all the media attention is directing the masses eyes to focus on Syria.
And now the French election and the possible breakup of the Eurozone.
Oh,...and this morning we have Wal Mart bribing officials in Mexico,
We have always had a MEU, Marine Expeditionary Unit, stationed on an LHD carrier with support vessels in the Middle East.
Typically they are deployed from Camp Pendleton like the 11th MEU I was on 2 years ago on the USS Bonhomme Richard, LHD-6.
What is new is that a second MEU is coming on deck to patrol the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. The reason is that we are unable to use our previous staging base on Bahrain due to political problems there and we need a platform.
The other new issue is that the W Coast MEU is now very busy at the Horn of Africa, Red Sea and Yemen and can’t cover the entire Middle East as before.
Too many new theaters and too much geography for our rapid response units to cover as before.
Thanks for the info.
