Consider the possibility that they are not different. They just don't feel as much need to mask how they have really always felt.
Hmm. That is a heck of a good point. I never considered that. A couple of my friends are pretty well off financially. Better off than me which ain't bad. So it is not because they are "mad" because they are not financially in good shape and "the white guy" is "richer". If you take that out of the equation then maybe you are right and that they have always been masking their true feelings. Which are that because I'm white I have in some way taken something from them. And because of that I owe them.
Your comment made me think. And the more I think about it the more it is indeed apparent that Obama has really set back race relations because he has fostered resentment against non-blacks. I'm personally tied of this kind of garbage. I am not responsible for the plight of anyone else no matter what their color. The fact that Obama has done this proves he is shallow and superficial. A lightweight. I think that at the end of the day he will not be re-elected. Too many people see what I see now or they can just feel that something is not right.
How sad, Obama had the chance of a lifetime. He could have brought the whole country together on the issue of race but instead went the other direction. I'm not sure what his end game is but I know one thing, he is only out for himself.
One doesn't feel wealthy because of the actual amount of "stuff" one has, but because of how much one has relative to those you interact with.
It's similar with intelligence. I knew a really smart black software developer -- sharp, confident, fun to hang out with. In his third-tier undergrad college he was the big fish, the smartest guy around. He went on to work at a place where he had a lot of peers who were as smart as him, but nobody dramatically smarter.
Then he went to a top school for his master's degree. He found himself in an environment where he wasn't the big fish. Affirmative action dragged him into a place where the people around him were so much smarter than him that he could no longer deny it to himself.
He came back from the west coast after one semester. The experience broke him, and made him bitter.
Getting back to your well-off friends, their younger days of being the big fishes among their peers may have given them expectations of where they think they should be. They may be comfortably well off by middle-class standards, but they see and interact with white people who are better off than them, and it may make them bitter.
