The early church honored martyrs, but some people refused to honor those who courted martyrdom by deliberately drawing the authorities' attention to themselves. Till was a martyr who courted his fate--if he had shut his mouth after the husband grabbed him he might be alive today. But maybe that makes him the African American equivalent of Achilles.
