Tony Salieri was the headmaster at the Vienna Choir Boys School. That's where he met Schubert. Schubert scored off the charts in the evaluations from the music instructors at the school, and as a result he was allowed to study with the headmaster.

Salieri ran a musical gym for Schubert, handing him opera libretti from his private library and giving him homework assignments to set those words to music.

Schubert and those others who were allowed to study with Salieri addressed him as "Grandfather". It was quite a privilege, and the students who studied with Salieri were a small but happy family.
