Sen. DeMint urges Republicans to unite behind Romney
Miami Herald ^ | 03.22.12 | JAMES ROSEN

WASHINGTON -- Jim DeMint, among the nation's conservative leaders, stopped just short Thursday of endorsing Mitt Romney for president as the South Carolina senator called on the former Massachusetts governor's foes to re-evaluate their campaigns. DeMint's appeal for Republicans to focus on defeating President Barack Obama came a day after former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, another influential conservative, endorsed Romney and urged party unity. "What I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly becoming our nominee," DeMint told reporters on Capitol Hill. At a time when a Romney staffer's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe is once again raising questions about Romney's conservative bona fides among the most stalwart Republicans, DeMint's vote of confidence could help the candidate solidify support among the party's base. "His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington - there's a lot to like there," DeMint said. DeMint said he had no "immediate plans to do an endorsement," but without naming them, he urged former Sen. Rick Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul to re-evaluate their campaigns. "I think we all need to look at this presidential primary and encourage the candidates to do a little self-reflection here - what's good for the country," DeMint said. "The sooner we can make a decision, I think the sooner we can focus on the real problem, which is Obama," he said. DeMint made it clear that he views a possible brokered presidential convention this summer as harmful for Republicans' chances of making Obama a one-term president.

Great point. Hopefully after this debacle conservatives will take back the GOP or form a new viable party.

. If you are really indifferent as to who is elected president then it doesn't really matter.

It's not that I am indifferent it's that I am impotent. I have not power over the situation. I don't know which is worse: Obama or Romney but I do know that Romney's lukewarm deceptiveness nauseates me. Obama's deceptiveness does not nauseate me, perhaps because it does not feel oriented at me.

I will no longer base my voting behavior on any predicted/guessed outcome. I feel free.

2 Chronicles 20:15
And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

And some of us live in realville.

We all live in God's creation and we can acknowledge his omnipotence or not.

Job 13
14 Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

Our Creator is the realty that supersedes all sensations, perceptions and silly prognostications.

Well, guess that just goes to show--DeMint is a RINO!!!

DeMint is Establishment. He cares more about protecting his place of power than he does the country.

I don’t think Conservatives vote for Presidents based on the VP selection, that should be a bonus, not a reason to vote for them. Sarah Palin did take some of the sting out of the 2008 vote and I was very pleased to vote for Dick Cheney in 2000 and 2004 but would have voted for W anyway.

I’m saving the whole argument about holding my nose or voting 3rd party until it becomes necessary. If Santorum and Newt are out today then today is the day to start that discussion. The reason they want that discussion today is to promote Romney’s inevitability. That discussion shouldn’t happen until after the convention, if at all.

We all live in God's creation and we can acknowledge his omnipotence or not.

John, who was in financial difficulty, walked into a church and started to pray. ''Listen God,'' John said. ''I know I haven't been perfect but I really need to win the lottery. I don't have a lot of money. Please help me out.'' He left the church, a week went by, and he hadn't won the lottery, so he walked into a synagogue. ''Come on, God,'' he said. ''I really need this money. My mom needs surgery and I have bills to pay. Please let me win the lottery.'' He left the synagogue, a week went by, and he didn't win the lottery. So, he went to a mosque and started to pray again. ''You're starting to disappoint me, God,'' he said. ''I've prayed and prayed. If you just let me win the lottery, I'll be a better person. I don't have to win the jackpot, just enough to get me out of debt. I'll give some to charity, even. Just let me win the lottery.'' John thought this did it, so he got up and walked outside. The clouds opened up and a booming voice said, ''John, buy a lottery ticket.''

The Lord helps those who help themselves. No amount of prayer will change the fact that 1 of 2 men will win the Presidential election in Nov Obama or Romney.

Job 13
14 Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?
15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

Job lost his family, fortune, and good-looks...so you keep praying for a miracle Job. I'm still living in realville.

Show me three substantial policy differences between Romney and Zero. These have to be based upon actions...not just campaign rhetoric (where Romney has taken all sides on an issue).

You're welcome.

I think they have a misprint. They said he is “seriously” conservative. Is that more conservative than “severely”?

Kind of funny they tout RINOmny vetoing a min. wage increase as a conservative credential when just a few weeks ago he was advocating for a min wage indexed to cost of living increases. That has been viewed as such a bad liberal idea that even a lot of Dems back away from it.

Does that count as “seriously” conservative? Ha ha. Your boy is a walking joke.

That might be the weakest list of accomplishments I’ve ever seen.

So on welfare, are you basically bragging that he did the same thing as Clinton?

He is joke. He ran from Reagan, refused to support Contract with America and has a governing record that would make most liberals blush.

Keep posting his “severely/seriously” conservative credentials. This is too much fun.

Wow....so when you can’t dispute the fact that Romney has a proven liberal record...comparable to Zero’s you resort to name calling. Ha ha!

The irony is that I won’t support your candidate because I disagree with his gun grabbing socialist positions...and suddenly I’m not a conservative.

Ha ha. It’s too funny that you posted an article from a site in the tank for Romney that claims he is “seriously” conservative. If Romneybots weren’t so “severely” sensitive, this wouldn’t be so much fun.

So what’s your favorite Romney position in regards to the NRA? The one where he has nothing in common with the NRA, or the one where he is a “lifetime” member? After he “shakes it up” like an “Etch a Sketch” which side do you think he will take in the general election?

Really!!! You are “seriously” trotting out an article from Bill Maher’s girlfriend. Ha ha! Over the past few weeks she has shown herself to be a “severe” conservative.

Maybe you should start a “severely” conservative website where everything is “just right”. After the primary season, you can shake it up and then support Romney’s position of the week. In the interest of telling you which side of a position to take in a timely manner, I hear he is going to start sending them out on Twitter.

Either Romney or Obama will be elected President in Nov. You're rooting for Obama and not the lifetime NRA member.

The irony is [snip] suddenly I’m not a conservative.

rat...It's the new conservatism.

I've been a big DeMint fan, as he has been a conservative bellweather. But this is truly jaw dropping. The GOP has gone mad, and is taking it's conservative base for granted now for two consecutive elections.

In 2008 ,I was slammed here for threatening to vote for the more conservative Libertarian candidate over McCain. This time I don't give a shit. I will not vote for Romney. Not now, not ever.

Ha ha. Your right I’m not a “severely” enough conservative to support the architect of socialized medicine, supporter of Planned Parenthood, cap & trade, liberal judges, forcing Catholic hospitals to provide contraception ( just like Zero), etc.

I guessing your world you would support Pelosi if she had an R behind her name.

Do you support Romney because his name starts with an “R” or because it has an “R” behind it?

Which Romney are you a fan of, the one that ran from association with Reagan, or the one that wants to put him on Mt. Rushmore?

Ha ha! Your candidate is an indefensible joke.

If RINOmny is the nominee, I’ll be voting third party. You can be proud that you supported the biggest loser since Carter. Ha ha!

Good luck with your “severely” conservative candidate. Hopefully everything turns out “just right” after he shakes it up like an EtchASketch!
