So let me get this straight? If I approach someone and say, “What are you doing here?” he has the legal right to begin brutally beating me with a bottle and can threaten to kill me, and I have no right to defend myself in any way?

He has the right to totally ignore you, and if you get too close and belligerent he has the right to stand his ground and go on about his business. If you lunge at him, or move too fast, or swear at him, I suppose he could beat you to a pulp if need be.
This is the Florida law. It applies to all situations, not just those where one of the parties has a firearm.
Oh, yeah, he probably has the right to bash you with his bag of Skittles. That's all he had handy, well, that and a can of tea in his pocket, and his cellphone ~ which is missing. That wasn't on the police report.
