Slave trade was outlawed in the British Empire in 1807 and in the U.S. in 1808. Mexico outlawed slavery prior to 1835.

My bad: Maybe the slave trade was outlawed but the ownership of Gypsy slaves was allowed up to 1856 in Europe.

And it is NEW Mexico, not that crime ridden country to the south of the state (then a territory) between Arizona and Texas.

Refer to "History for Genealogists" by Judy Jacobson, published 2009 by the Genealogical Publishing House, Baltimore, MD. Pages 27 (Gypsy slaves) and 184 (NEW Mexico slavery).
