The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the NAACP, has gone to the United Nations -- specifically the U.N. Human Rights Council -- for, in the words of USA Today, "help battling what the organization views as forces attempting to push back voting rights."
Those "forces" are laws being passed by various states that require a photo ID for voting.
The NAACP move is so absurd and so self-destructive that one has to wonder why the organization has done this. According to the Freedom House 2011 assessment of freedom in the world, of the 41 members of the U.N. Human Rights Council, fewer than half are free countries. Ten are ranked "Not Free," and 12 "Partly Free." Among the "Not Free" members are Angola, China, Congo, Cuba, Jordan, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Those countries' elections, if they have them, are rigged, and prominent opponents are jailed, tortured and killed.
To bring a human rights complaint before countries in which there are almost no human rights is truly absurd. That the alleged human rights violation takes place in the freest country in the world further elevates the level of absurdity. And when the alleged violation is a law that requires all voters, irrespective of race, creed or color, to show photo identification before voting, we have gone beyond the absurd and entered a modern Twilight Zone.
The absurdity explains why what the NAACP doing is also self-destructive. It's one thing for a prominent individual or organization to make a mistake. But it is quite another to seem ludicrous, which is how the NAACP appears to everyone who is not on the left -- and perhaps even to thoughtful leftists.
Why, then, would the NAACP open itself to ridicule?
According to NAACP President Ben Jealous, the reason is that "We are here today because in the past 12 months, more U.S. states have passed more laws pushing more U.S. citizens out of the ballot box than in any year in the past century."
One can only say that if in the past 100 years, fewer blacks were disenfranchised than in the past 12 months, all the claims about Jim Crow laws disenfranchising blacks must have been wildly exaggerated. But, of course, this, too, is absurd.
As South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley pointed out, one needs a photo ID in order to obtain Sudafed. One therefore might as well argue that blacks and other minorities are disproportionately denied the right to purchase Sudafed because a photo ID is required. The counter argument that there is no comparison between the two because there is no fonstitutional right to Sudafed completely misses the point. The Sudafed example does not argue constitutionality; it argues against the claim that great numbers of people will not vote if a photo ID is necessary. If few members of racial minorities have been prevented from getting a cold pill because of the need for a photo ID, it stands to reason that the need for a photo ID won't prevent blacks and others from voting.
The truth is that it insults the intelligence of blacks and Hispanics to claim that getting an official photo ID is too laborious, too demanding, and ultimately disenfranchising.
So, why is the NAACP going to the U.N.?
Because the wonderful fact of American life is that most American civil liberties and civil rights organizations have little reason for their continued existence. The NAACP, therefore, has to justify its existence. Which it does by manufacturing crises (and hopefully garnering media attention). Without major eruptions of racism, its raison d'etre disappears -- along with its funding.
That is the real reason something as utterly innocuous as requiring a person to show a photo in order to vote is taken to the United Nations. It gets attention and makes supporters of the NAACP think their money is being used for the greatest electoral rights battle in a hundred years.

Send the UN and the NAACP to Geneva, and keep them there.
Continuing the infantalization of Blacks.
The truth is that it insults the intelligence of blacks and Hispanics to claim that getting an official photo ID is too laborious, too demanding, and ultimately disenfranchising.
...........................................................
Another truth is that it insults the intelligence of blacks to continue Affirmative Action Jobs, because they cannot pass the same test a white person has to pass to obtain that job.
That's a sin.
Absurd? It’s brilliant. The UN and the NAACP are fellow travelers. Where else can they be taken seriously?
At the end of the article is the KEY to much of the insanity occuring in the USA today. “There is a need to justify their continued existence.”
The NAACP has succeeded, I believe, much beyond it’s original intentions. In fact, the battle is won, and the leaders must be quite anxious over the security of their jobs.
But the same can be said of the “Environmental” movement. The air is cleaner, the water is better, the environment is much improved beyond the dreams of the “original” environmentalists. GOOD HEAVENS...The well paying jobs can be in danger. Thus EPA regulators must justify their positions by instituting every expanded regulations.
Bureaucrats in the WELFARE INDUSTRY must protect their positions by insuring a never ending and ever growing NEEDY population. Heaven forbid the people needing assistance get off the welfare rolls.
The solving of many problems puts into peril the well intentioned people striving to solve the problem.

NAACP = hateful, silly self servingrespecting organizatiion damaging to the people they are supposed to be helping.
As their own name describes them as a racist organization they are no better than the KKK.
They and obama, sharpton, j. jackson, un-reverand fairycon are the major reason the “N” word is still bandied about.
They refuse to become part of being just AMERICANS and see color and race everywhere.
NAACP racist by definition and by this act have shown themselves to be traitors to the USA but that is not really new news.
If you voted for Obama to prove you were not a racist then vote against him this time to prove you are not an idiot.
The left treats their supporters like dumb animals, and even the supporters treat each other like dumb animals. Every leftist sees every other leftists as a dumb animal. (It must be a Darwin thing.)
It sounds like a real bitch to be a leftists. Personally, I like being seen and treated as an intelligent human being.( Which is why I'm right wing.)
I think we can assume that the U.N. countries will jump on the chance to criticize the U. S.
Once this happens and the news is publicized to the U.S. voters, I think the result will backfire on the NAACP and lower their approval standing with the majority of our citizens.
Hallmark Black Holes Card Is Racist
The NAACP is as credible as Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton and most Americans already know it.
Look up ‘identity document’ on Wikipedia. It has a country-by-country list of required ID for all citizens. It will be tough for a country that requires everyone to have ID at all times to criticize the US on this one.
Nah, hypocrisy is a staple of U. N. rhetoric. They will argue the double standard with no sense of shame.
And the MSM in this country will solemnly report it as though the resulting furor among progressives was representative of a free democracy.
There is no constitutional right to vote. Thus, for many blessed years, women were not allowed to vote.
They could have saved a ton of moolah by going to New York...Why did they go to Geneva???
Personally, I would like to see the U.N. operate, and coalate in Geneva permanently...Rent out the existing NYC facility for low income thugs...Oh, wait, it already is...
As an election official (Presiding Judge) at the polling location in my precinct, I will follow the election laws of the state of Texas, which have been voted on in the majority, and implemented by the signature of the governor of this state...
I will continue to ask for state issued Photo ID from “everyone” who comes to vote in my precinct...I have spent too much time keeping the voting rolls in my precinct up to date, and the only way to effectively do so is to ask for somethign that validates who that person is, and their current address...It has nothing to do with any of the nonsense the NAACP or the DOJ are trying to insinuate...
I will not deviate from that course...They will have to remove me from that position, and the only person or representative from the Secretary of States’ office in Austin would be able to do so...
Anyone else coming in and disrupting my polling location who is not the lawful authority will be arrested and charged with disrupting a polling location...I have the authority and charter to do that...And it will be the first time I may have to do that...
The ball is in their court!!! I will spend no more time worrying about this nonsense...
It is also an election year. It is predictable and expected that the NAACP will use the race card against the Reps. They do it every Presidential election.
