Texas "Gunboats" to Patrol Rio Grande

Texas unveiled the second of six new 'interceptor' gunboats on Thursday, similar to Navy swift boats that plied the rivers of Vietnam during the Vietnam War, to patrol the waterways of the Mexico border.

"They have night vision capabilities, they have ballistic shielding, and the first couple of boats have fully automatic machine guns," department spokesman Tom Vinger told Reuters.

The boats are emblazoned with the words 'Texas Highway Patrol,' each will have three super quiet 300 horsepower outboard engines.

The boats will be allowed to patrol the northern half of the Rio Grande between El Paso and its mouth near Brownsville, because the international boundary line runs down the middle of the river.

The sheriff of the county north of Houston has a drone aircraft and says it will be armed. My question: What deputy with his belly hanging over his belt is trained and qualified to fly an armed drone aircraft?

That makes no sense at all. I can understand the British not knowing the local geography, but they should at least pull out a map.

I said AC-130s. A-10s and Apaches would be good, too.

So what does the law state the Texas Highway Patrol can do if they receive fire from the Mexican side of the border? Personally I would shoot back.

That makes no sense at all.

I could only guess they meant the US side ('north shore') as opposed to the Mexican side ('south shore') of the river.

Thanks. I can see that reading now.

I usually think of the northern half as being that part in New Mexico and a little bit downstream from there.
