Allen West spokesman defends 'nanny state' bill

Congressman Allen West announced his support and co-sponsorship of the Safe Teen and Novice Uniform Protection, or STANDUP Act, at a teen driving event at Jupiter High School on Tuesday, as reported in BPR’s March 14 article “Allen West hits a Porsche while simulating texting and driving.”

The act, if passed, would ban teens from driving while texting, restrict driving with other teens and impose other limitations on young drivers. With 50 members of Congress, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Allstate Insurance Co., among others, signed on, the bill seems to be “in good hands.”

But the conservative congressman, normally a prime target for left-wing criticism, is being blasted from his base on this one.

Local driving laws are NOT a Federal matter, not even close.

Why do you suppose the Feds use the threat of withholding Federal funds (which of course come from residents of the various states) to coerce the states into passing these laws, instead of of simply passing a Federal law banning texting while driving and setting uniform minimum age requirements for drivers?

The reason is, they know the Federal government has no such authority.

It is a devious charade used to erode states rights. The Feds say, “Texas, South Dakota, Wyoming, NO, of course we are not forcing you to change your laws. We’ll simply turn all your residents into tax slaves for the rest of the nation, by withholding Federal funding from your state, if you don’t comply!”

What if the Federal government raised the personal income tax rate to 95%. Then it passed a law saying that anyone who refrains from smoking, conservative activism, bowling and going to church an entitlement equal to 90% of their taxable income? They wouldn’t technically be banning smoking, conservative activism, bowling and church going, but effectively they would be.

This is essentially what the Feds do to the states with laws like this bill that West is supporting.

I’m new to FR also, Ollies girl, and I see nothing wrong with anything you’ve said. I can’t say that I’m totally comfortable with the legislation for all he reasons stated herein, however, I know Col. West to be an honorable, small-government man. There could be reasons he’s doing this totally unknown to us, and for that reason I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. But I’ll remember, and keep a closer eye on him. That is all.

Don’t pay attention to Joe. He’s being a “skitzoid” today. That is what West calls Joe and his other conservative supporters. They love it, I guess. They want him to be their nanny.

He’s a Rino. Another voter’s nose holder.

And watch the missey business, mr. big! ;)
