Residents, workers, and tourists in the Back Bay swapped stories of the blackout and tried to get back to their normal routines today, with varying degrees of success, in the wake of a transformer fire Tuesday that knocked out power to thousands in the area.

Power was out in some businesses, but on in others. Businesses were closed on one block of Newbury Street, with signs posted in the windows, while in the next block, shops were open and cafes were serving food.

Lovenia Thomas, 73, who lives on the 11th floor of a Dartmouth Street subsidized housing complex said she was on her way to church Tuesday night when she heard two booms, her lights flickered, and then went out.

What did she do? “I just went on to church,” she said. But she said today that she was worried about her brother, who lives nearby and has Alzheimer’s.

The fire cut power to more than 21,000 customers Tuesday night. By this morning, 12,000 customers remained without power, NStar said. An estimated 800 NStar workers were working to restore power, the company said.

And the lights...all went out...in Massachusetts...

Sure, get rid of the coal burning and nuclear plants and
use wind energy—no wait, you can’t...because windmills would spoil the Kennedys’ views of the water.

Suicide squirrels. The scourge of humanity.

I'm just assuming it was a squirrel, and that's a good bet.

Transformer fire? Unheard of. I’m sure it rivals Fukushima.

I guess based on the “story” just above this one that we should eliminate all transformers in the Boston area (think of the clean-up costs if one should leak).
