If done right Windows 8 may face another monopoly challenge as it could corner the market.

Microsoft - done right.
Historically an oxymoron.
Don’t ask me about my Windows phone.

I hope they do get it right.
The one thing they will have is the fact they can use third party manufacturers.
remember not one ipad is made in the USA but they are all apple.
I would like to see it advertised where the OS of a tablet (slate is a stupid designation for tech) can be updated.

I'll believe that when I hold one and it doesn't take 45 seconds to boot up.

Remember netscape?
MS gave explorer away for free and killed that product.
MS has the power to drive real tablet prices far down.
have a nice harcore tablet for $100.00 (with a 10” plus screen)

Ever compare the boot times of a windows phone vs iPhone? Windows Phone boots in about 1/2 the time as the iPhone and when I say boot I mean it’s up and running not just at a login screen.

ICS still fails to offer a truly differentiated experience.
This a straw man argument if I ever saw one.
“Dude are you going to get an Android tablet?”
“No dude, its user experience isn’t truly differentiated. Hello? Like, whatever.”

Is Steve Ballmer still running Microsoft? If so, they won't need to worry about approaching monopoly status anytime soon.

Any tablets running Windows are more than likely going to be made by one of two companies that makes tablets for Apple, Dell, HP, Sony, Samsung, Asus, Acer, Amazon, etc. and those companies are Foxconn or Quanta.
It's possible there will be Windows 8 tablets made by a company other than Foxconn or Quanta, but I doubt it.

I’m pretty sure it will... the new phones released with Mango have it. Plus you can even get it on the older ones if you are a developer.

How would Win8 drive tablet prices down? Why would a $100 Win8 tablet in any way be comparable to an iPad?
MS IE killed Netscape because both ran on the same hardware AND required Windows; MS just included IE with Windows, and few users had any reason to install another product which did the same thing as the already-installed IE.
Different issue with Win8 vs. iOS 5. iPad hardware & iOS are made for each other, so both can be very efficient. Win8 will have to run on anything (including a cheezy $100 tablet), which in turn will have to run any OS (Win8, Android, whatever), a combination with drives up prices in any attempt to match iPad/iOS performance.
Your anecdote and conclusion are contradictory. Apple will win this fight precisely because of the same reason MS won the browser fight: control of the underlying platform, and a symbiotic relationship with what runs on it.

I sure do, and it was a good browser.
25 years ago, we had Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope.
Today we have Obama, no cash, and no hope!If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.
Or you can get raw with these strings.
How about this gamechanger from America's Got Talent (which they SHOULD have won).
And finally, this, dedicated to the one and only rdb2, whose eyes are growing dim.
Either way, the violin is sweet yet LETHAL.
Do it!
