HOUSTON - Workers at a Houston restaurant are left dumbfounded after a strange theft. Honeybees and their hive are missing...and they didn't just fly away.
Haven chef Randy Evans explained how bees help pollinate the Meyer lemon trees at the restaurant the Upper Kirby district; that is, until the entire hive was stolen from his restaurant's garden early Saturday morning.
"Someone had to know what they were doing. They came when it was dark, cold and raining, the most inactive time for bees," said Evans.
Surveillance video captured a truck rolling into Haven restaurant's parking lot just before 6am. The truck drives off 90 seconds later, taking the restaurant's green beehive along.
"That's crazy. I don't know what you would do with a beehive," said one customer with whom we spoke. "Who would do that?"
Beekeeping is growing in popularity around the country. But local beekeeper John Berry says he's never heard of anyone stealing hives, especially since there are inherent risks.
"You can steal it without knowing what you're doing, but you'd be in for some problems," Berry said.

How much would something like that be worth, anyway?
Green beehive for green bees???
Honey bees are becoming more rare today, but it might be a cyclical natural thing.
I take it that this was not a sting operation.
About $100.00 for a 3 LB Package of “Replacement Bees”, Around $150.00 for the Bee Hive “hardware”, Bees time and honey Priceless.
Sounds like this restaurant is a watering hole for greenies, tree huggers and keepers of the earth.
All that they have to do is to bow down to the bee god and request that friendly and sensitive bees from nearby hives will come over to pollinate their trees...after all the trees only bloom for about a month once a year.

Inside job... that’s the buzz on the street.
It would take a while for these bees to begin making more lemon flower honey.
I bet a bee hive theft creates quite the buzz in the right circles.
I hope they got enough info on the video to smoke out the perpetrators.
Randy Evans bee deeply saddened . . . .
I beelieve it.
Someone wasn’t minding their own bee’s wax...
Were there any bright lights seen in the sky?
Any cattle missing their ears and other appendages?
This may be a job for Mulder and Scully!
"We're coming for you."
Must have been part of a sting operation
They said about $1000.00 on the news this morning.
You could say that they are miss bee Haven.
I could be wrong, but...this was a premeditated "get up early and steal the beehive" thing rather than a late night drunk party kinda "Hey, let's go steal that there beehive...watch this ya'll" incident at 3am.
Could be more than that depending on how many deeps and how many supers. I've been a beekeeper for four years and I'm still astonished at the cost. 2 deeps and 2 supers (painted) with frames would be well over $200 with shipping. You can add more if there was a hove stand taken, top feeder (unless they were using the jar method), inner cover, outside cover, etc... and this doesn't include the bees as you mentioned and the honey stores. What's more... if they have to start up another hive, they can kiss any honey harvest goodbye for this year.
