If a parent is STUPID ENOUGH to let their middle-schooler on Facebook, then yes, the school should have the right to monitor it (especially considering that the parent is already stupid enough to put the kid in public school, in the first place).
Why? WTF does the school have to do with Facebook? And WTF was a sheriff involved?
What if the parents can't afford either private school or to have 1 stay home? Pretty intolerant, aren't we?
FYI, I don't think that the girl lost her privacy rights simply because she wasn't 12. Frankly, the parents should have been contacted and ASKED (not intimidated into) releasing the password - or, better yet, asked to shut down the account or to monitor it for bullying (assuming that this was the concern). I'm sick and tired of every wannabee dictator out there deciding that one or another of our basic civil rights are meaningless in the face of safety or some other BS excuse.
Huh??? Why should the SCHOOL be able to monitor it AT ALL!!!
If those “stupid parents” had a lick of sense, they should be the ones monitoring the activity...
I can think of all sorts of creative punishments for non-compliance in the home that make the monitoring so much easier...Most of the time kids find a way to circumvent this monitoring anyway, I know I would find a way...But the point is it IS NOT the job of the schools or some policing authority to monitor a child’s activities online...
There is no justification , nor Constitutional right to coerce a citizen into divulging any information like this without due process, much less a warrant...
Nothing personal, we just have a simple dissagreement here...
“If a parent is STUPID ENOUGH to let their middle-schooler on Facebook, then yes, the school should have the right to monitor it”
Why are you on FREE REPUBLIC when you believe the government has the right to take control over someone else’s kids?? You obviously don’t even know what Facebook is when you say such stupid things as that. What a fascist idiot you jmust be.
So do you think that teachers and principals should follow a student around at the park after school? We didn’t have FB when I was middle school aged, but we did have parks and telephones. What goes on after school is none of the school’s business.
Are you kidding me??? Um, no, the school has NO RIGHT to monitor anything not going on their network.
More Principles who feel they are lord over all...
