I read the John Carter on Mars series about 30 years ago. I absolutely loved them. I always thought it would be wonderful if they could make a movie about them, but I also knew that it would be impossible to do the stories justice at the (then) state of the art effects. So I’ve been waiting 30 years for this to finally happen.
I think Disney did a wonderful job of realizing the first book, Princess of Mars. It might be a little corny, but you have to remember that these stories were written more than 50 years ago and copied many, many times.
The characters and creatures and Barsoomian world were *exactly* like I pictured them from the books. Very well done, in my opinion. Captured the spirit of the books to a T.
agreed. Saw it yesterday in iMax 3D with my son, and we had a blast. FX, story line, action, villains and bad guys, battle scenes - i think this is Hollywood going after a studio that doesn’t toe the party line.
will buy with it comes out in blu-ray
I'm with you ... I'm sure I'll greatly enjoy this movie ... flop or not! :)

Thanks.
Naturally such a movie would be a box office flop, considering the character and sensibilities of today’s theater audience.

True...they were written almost exactly a century ago (serious started in 1912).
These stories were actually written in 1911 and 1912, more than 100 years ago.
“John Carter was the lead character in the first novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, set on a fictionalized version of Mars known as Barsoom. Written between July and September 28, 1911, the novel was serialized as Under the Moons of Mars in the pulp magazine The All-Story from February to July 1912. It later appeared as a complete novel only after the success of Burroughs’ Tarzan series. For its October 1917 hardcover publication by A.C. McClurg & Company, the novel was retitled A Princess of Mars.”
Except woola did not look like a calot at all, more like a cabazon with legs.
Except for wardrobe I assume.
If I remember correctly, ERB died in the 1950s. "A Princess of Mars" was written about the time of WWI! So it's been darned near 100 years since the story was written!
As I mentioned before, I learned to read with those books, and hadn't read them since about the 5th grade, though I did go back and re-read the Pelucidar series back in high school. I'm now listening to the audio book at work.
