Envia has figured out how to improve energy density at the anode and cathode and store more lithium. In short, he claims to have doubled energy density and halved the cost of lithium-ion batteries. And he says that his breakthrough isnt theoreticalpacks are already built on an automotive scale and are being tested by automakers around the world.
Its impossible to verify all that, and Kapadia wont tell me which automakers hes working with, though GM is presumably one of them. Specifically, Envia says it has reached an energy density of 400-watt-hours per kilogram in auto-grade lithium-ion cells, and achieved a price target of $150 per kilowatt hour.

Sure is a mighty big corner.
zero will probably funnel some cash to them....
Not in the cold, and still powered by “dirty” sources. In others words, still crap for vehicles.
Talking points for Zer0 and the MARXIST media.
More like 40 mile range could be just around the corner ... providing the batteries actually last for a while, recharge without exploding, and work in cold weather.
If this pans out,an AFFORDABLE electric cars with a 300 mile range could be just around the corner.
So, just to be safe, I shouldn't abandon my work on the engine that runs on Unicorn Farts?
I could never be a liberal. I just don't have the capacity for blind faith.
What else would you expect from NPR. Just like Car and Driver voting last year for the Chevy Dolt as Car of the Year.
I do miss The Car Guys since crossing NPR from my list of stations.
That is just about all I miss but I miss them just the same.
Forget cars.
If you don’t see model aircraft using this soon- it’s not happening.
Where is the electricity to charge those batteries going to come from?
Dirty sources like clean burning American coal and nuclear. Don’t tell me you are one of those Global warning whackos that considers carbon dioxide “dirty”.
An electric car powered by Virginia coal, is my dream vehicle.
Great, he ought to work his way up through a proto-type with a private loan arranged with venture capitalists he’s convinced. He doesn’t need to jump to a billion dollar loan through well-connected Dem donors from the DOE.
Stopped reading right there.
It ain’t going to be worth squat without resolving the recharge time issue.
Get it under 10 minutes for a full charge and they’ll be viable as an alternative to a conventional car.
Otherwise, they stay as commuters and as curios.
How would this be Marxist. If it turns out to be true, and an a 25000 dollar electric car could drive 300 miles on a charge, what is “Zer0 or Marxist” about that.
The bi-annual “We Improved The Battery” annoucement.
You obviously didn’t actually read the article.
That's all this article amounts to. If I only had a dollar for every time I've read that somebody says they have better battery.
Batteries are getting better, but few people realize how much better and cheaper they would need to be to come close to the power provided by internal combustion engines. Won’t happen any time soon, if ever.
More likely, a Chevy Volt will have a range of 70 miles instead of 35.
