There was an overflow crowd greeting Newt Gingrich when he arrived at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in the southeast corner of Alabama on Saturday.

Looking over the hundreds of people packed into the gallery area and spilling down the steps in the main lobby, Gingrich enthused, "What a crowd. I'm really impressed. There must be no one left at Wal-Mart this afternoon."

Condescending? I took it that the crowd was so big that the biggest store in town (Walmart) must be empty.

If Newt was in Florida and substituted Disney World for Walmart, would you be offended?

I guess people read what they want into a comment. If Romney said the same thing, I probably would take it the way you did with Newt, but Romney has a history of acting like the haughty John Kerry and we all know it.

Let's see, lifetime NRA member, ya all, I like grits, his Wife drives two Cadillacs. Romney sounds pathetic. Newt doesn't have a history of BS’ing the crowd like Romney, and Santorum is just too sanctimonious (look at me, look at me) for me to support him in the Primaries. If he is the last man standing I'll pull the lever for him.

I believe romney is taking the weekend off, no scheduled events.

I know he's got nothing today, I read that in a news article, but don't know about tomorrow. He does have a breakfast in Mobile Mon morning.

Maybe he's spending the weekend with Beck... who just announced we all need to get together now and support Mitt...

I don't know why Santorum even bothers with these kinds of remarks anymore, he has pretty much sewn up the pharisee-holier-than-thou-whited-wall vote. What a sanctimonious prig. Ugh. ____________________________________________________________ Exactly. Someone needs to tell The Right Reverend Father Rick that nobody really gives a crap if teenagers are going to buy condoms before going on their date next Saturday night. And, remind him that when he was in the Senate, the GOP controlled the White House, The House and the Senate AND WE STILL HAVE ABORTIONS!!! I'm pro-life and against same-sex marriage, but, he will NOT stop any of this if he is President. So, please, Rev. Rick, talk about how to get gas prices down, Employment numbers up, getting ObamaCare out and what to do about Iran. Otherwise, shut up.

I also read it as condescending.

Damn. So many sensitive people. If this was offensive to you, and apparently it was, Rush’s “slut” comment must have pushed you over the edge and made you double up on your medication.

Nope. Everybody worked like heck today... calls and door-to-door... the workers I know didn't even take time off to go to any events. Just worked around the clock. it's double down time. Are you able to make any calls tomorrow or Monday? It would really help, I have a feeling you'd be very persuasive. Romney started his sliming ads bigtime yesterday... I just hate that.

the campaign did send out a little memo to some of the staffers, saying that the santorum campaign, staffers, and media, are going to start a huge newt's go to go effort in the coming days... and everyone is going to have stay focused, disregard and keep doing what they have to do. And not get discouraged. This is the crunch time.. where you keep doing what you believe in while everybody every place is telling you it's worthless.

Also, maybe beware of this: Newt's campaign has some santorum moles, I guess everybody has their moles, and they got reports yesterday, the santorum staff supporters, ops, etc, top down, are being told to be nice in interactions with anybody re Newt, so as to "attract" Newt supporters and gently change their minds.

I admit. I almost got a little lulled yesterday by santorum supporters who are usually brutal, being very nice to me.

for what it's worth...

They’ve tried it on me before...one day as nasty and judgemental as can be....the next it’s all soothing words and soft selling.

>> I am just stunned that many Santorum supporters can’t move beyond trivialities.

The Conservative contingency is not without its fair share of statist subscribers, and Santorum has a way of satisfying their moral, indignant appetite. It’s not any more complicated than that.

The irony is I’d like a similar outcome, except without the force of law, without the force of statism.

Rick Santorum is good, intelligent man. I don’t wish to discredit his virtues, but there’s no way I want him a leadership role, not yet anyway. He needs to come of Presidential age.

Not me. It’s been all Newt hate, all the time. I am glad to see you didn’t fall for it, some of us are so dense we had to be told :)

Nothing Newt does to repent and put his past behind him will ever be enough for some of the people on FR. It is truly amazing some of the hate on display here, especially by so-called Christians and family-value conservatives.

That's what gets me about these politic-Evangelicals who are supporting Santorum so heavily - they can see and condemn someone's sin, but only when it's in a candidate they don't support.

I am just stunned that many Santorum supporters can’t move beyond trivialities.

Why are you surprised? Aren't trivialities about all that makes up Santorum's campaign?

As I read it Newt has more committed delegates than Santorum does as of now.

I hope there will be a huge audience watching.

the reason this is so important is because it isn't only just relevant to the MS and AL, but to all the future contests coming up, and especially if the sancto campaign plans to start a concerted newt's got to go effort. This could be some great ammo for the coming days and for rebuttal. There is no choice but to put all the chips on Newt and pray he comes through, and Santorum gets exposed for what he is - a superficial talking points candidate.

This little vid takes 1 minute to watch, and it is worth it. It was a debate with Newt and Rick before this campaign, and Santorum choked and couldn't answer, newt gave an answer, and you could tell he wasn't even thinking with 1/10 of his brain, and the people were out of their seats with a standing O immediately.

If you have time, please try to put a little get-together for Newt and watch this... or consider doing it in the future...

The Dothan Walmart is pretty nice, and always busy whenever I’ve been there.

You’re not from Lower Alabama, are you? Most Southerners can laugh about how there is only one red light in their small town and maybe a Wal-Mart that serves a whole county (or three) of people. What else is there to do in the Wiregrass? Tip cows? I confess that I am not from Lower Alabama though I have lots of family and friends who are. I’ve spent some time there as well, and I don’t think it’s condescending at all to joke about there being nothing to do there except to go to Wal-Mart. Great people. Great food. Roll Tide! (oh and do I have to say War Eagle!?)

You what’s also ironic?

If social conservatism is all you care about, then there’s still no reason to pick Santorum over Newt.

I mean, we know Newt would choose strict constructionist judges who won’t push this “living, breathing” Constitution nonsense, and who won’t suddenly find a constitutional mandate for special rights for gays.

Newt is pro-life. I mean, he’s the guy who shepherded the PBA ban through Congress, and to Clinton’s desk, that first time around. People can whine about that “implantation” kerfluffle from a couple of month’s back, but the fact is, that discussion exists more in the realm of insular Catholic theology than it does on any practical level in dealing with abortion. Newt would oppose abortion, and there’s no real reason to say he wouldn’t.

Newt has a proven record on welfare reform, which is frankly about as truly pro-family as anything you can do. Welfare is undermining and destroying the basis of the family unit in this country. Newt helped to pass the reform that slowed this down for a few years, at least.

I’m very social conservative myself, and I see no reason to trust Santorum more on these issues than Newt.
