A federal judge has ordered the city to pay an estimated $128 million in back wages to minorities who applied to be firefighters with the FDNY, which is still 97 percent white and allegedly racist. Black and Hispanic applicants who took the departments screening test in 1999 or 2002 and were not selected will be contacted about the settlement, which is intended to "recreate the conditions and relationships that would have been had there been no unlawful discrimination."
An expert witness for the Justice Department, Bernard Siskin, calculated the amount of wages black and Hispanic applicants would have earned had they passed the entrance exam at the same rates as white applicants. The amount to be paid out, however, will be offset against how much the applicants actually earned during the time period they could have been firefighters. But the City Law Department claims that when the final calculations are made, the city will have to pay will be far less than $128 million, and maybe nothing at all.
The ruling comes on the eve of the FDNY's annual testing, which begins next week with a new "racially acceptable" test, as the Daily News puts it. 61,000 applicants will compete for a few thousand positions, and NY1 reports that blacks make up 23 percent of the applicants and another 23 percent are Hispanic.

You have to be a lot smarter than you think to work in an urban fire department - chemistry involving combustion is part of it. If you looked at the test and considered that an IQ of 85 is average for blacks, the difficulty would be obvious - especially when AA gives its “beneficiaries” a raging sense of entitlement and a belief that studying is a “white” thing.
Nepotism? Mainly a barrier for whites. Blacks in general don’t pass these or any other exams at remotely comparable levels as whites.
I’m afraid that’s easy. They give a bonus for “life experience.”
Obviously Asians and Whites don’t have any “life experience” and Blacks and Hispanics do.
This is one of those very rare instances where the plaintiffs probably have a pretty good case.
97% white is just too skewed for something to not be amiss.
For a difference of one standard deviation (and some sources see modern school children closing that gap) to mean a 97% fail rate still sounds a bit odd.
It means that blacks who do not pass the written exam are given preferential treatment over those who score well on the test.
The Vulcans are akin to ACORN, Jesse Jackson and the entire Obama administration. Black applicants who do not score well enough to make the hiring list are pushed up to the top of the list and hired through threats of intimidation, litigation and an accompanying federal decree.
I’d be curious about Asian Oriental representation in passing that test.
They are known for smarts, maybe not that much for brute strength but that differs from individual to individual — there are husky Koreans, Chinese, Japanese etc.
The world is not just all either Negro or Caucasian.

Shouldn’t be a problem for NYC ... I’m sure the Bloom will find something to tax to provide for the payment. Betcha when the word gets out, the payout ends up way more than 128 million!
Wait until they discover there are not enough minority brain and heart surgeons .... now that could really prove to be fatal!

I would rather suffer and wait as long as possible for a white doctor than take a chance with a minority doctor or surgeon. In fact, you have to presume (fair or not) that any minority professional got where he (or she) is thanks to affirmative action, and not brains, qualifications, merit, or hard work. Apparently, minorities like it that way or they wouldn't keep voting for Democrats.
Man, if I was a smart, hard-working black man I would be absolutely beside myself with rage at affirmative action and the scumbag Democrats who use it as a slimy way to pander.

In NYC firefighting is in the family. The sons and nephews and cousins of firefighters volunteer early and learn the trade from their kin. They know what they are doing and hence do well on the exams. This only makes for a better, more closely knit and knowledgeable department. At the same time nothing keeps anyone of any race from passing the tests and demonstrating the aptitude expect a lack of motivation and smarts perhaps. . . There simply wasn’t a shred of evidence of racial bias demonstrated by the plaintiffs.
Having worked for 20 years at a world famous Boston hospital I think I can speak on this issue.In short,a good percentage of black physicians with whom I worked seemed,for all the world,to be very talented and fully qualified.However,more than a few didn't seem to be qualified..perhaps a somewhat higher percentage than is found among white physicians.
IMO "affirmative action" is very damaging to those black people who *are* qualified to be physicians,lawyers,accountants,cops,etc.
