In the days leading to Super Tuesday contests, Rick Santorum stepped away from social issues and bombastic speeches while barnstorming Ohio to recast himself as the underdog whose blue-collar roots would stay true to American values.
Yet the former senator from Pennsylvania lost ground, slipping to a near dead heat with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Ohio, the key state among 10 in which voters will cast ballots today, pollsters said.
"I thought his message has become so unclear on who he is or what he stands for that I am losing confidence on his ability to win the election in November," Dana Kasel, 43, of Perrysburg, Ohio, a Czechoslovakia native who became a U.S. citizen, said of Santorum. "It was his talk about how his grandfather realized the American dream that attracted me."
In a weekend poll of 753 likely GOP primary voters, Romney pulled ahead of Santorum, 34 percent to 31 percent -- a 10-point shift in one week, said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. The survey's 3.6-percentage-point margin of error "makes the Ohio race too close to call, but Romney is the one with the wind at his back," Brown said. (Snip)

Small world. Did she get her 30 pieces of silver yet?
I am perfectly clear that I support Newt, and detest Romney. If we lose Ohio, Newt will still come out with more delegates that Santorum. And then Newt's potential momentum after tonight, all of Georgia's delegates, etc,,, may well change the direction of the race.
I you want to beat Romeny, you had better wake up quick and help us get Newt nominated while there is still time. Santorum can't win for several reasons. Help us get Santorum out of the way and we can and will make that happen.
You did the right thing! This stupidity of voting for who ever is the closest to Romney is insane. Just vote what your heart tells you and stay true to one candidate and plan.
You can vote for your favorite. It’s a free country. But in Ohio if you don’t vote Santorum, mitt will win. Guaranteed. And that is more sane than your plan.
:)
Santorum supporters have nobody to blame but themselves, and their flawed candidate. It was apparent around the time of the Michigan debate Santorum was sliding.
Stick it! Jack wagon..........
Goodness gracious. Ohio exit polls indicate Romney evenly split conservative voters with Santorum. Sigh.
Because Freepers would rather go down with the old SSgingrich than beat Romney.
I read that Barbara Bush has taped a robo call for her and #41's candidate Romney for Ohio voters. Isn't that special?
Were I in Ohio, I would vote for Newt Gingrich. His rivals are both lawyers. Congress already has too many and we don't need a lawyer president.
SSsantorum you mean. It was obvious to everyone but ardent Santorum that he wasn;t viable weeks ago. Thanks for dooming us to Romney.
That was a cheap shot.
I won't get drawn into a fan club for any politician. I will 'stupidly' vote in a way that maximizes the chances that we'll get rid of both Romney and then Obama.
Holy crap. FR has lost it. You guys really believe Gingrich can beat Romney, with all evidence to the contrary, and now all the OH FReepers are out there voting newt, who has zero chance, and pushing Romney to the top.
If I were voting today, and Gingrich was closer to Romney in my state polls, I’d think it wise and sane to vote for newt. You all are on romney’s side.
“If he does, your vote helped him.”
No, it’s those that found Santorum to be lacking. Romney spammed us big time, but the Romney criticism of Santorum was devastating. And it was simply Santorum not so clearly stating his own case, or lack thereof.
I suspect that Santorum is a politician because he’d be a lousy lawyer.
BTW, my mind was made up a long time ago that Gingrich was the best choice available.
That’s what happens when you try to tailor your message for the audience. He needs to keep making the point that economic and social conservatism are inseparable.
Good on you!
God bless you and all of Newt Gingrich’s steadfast supporters.
We need him for our Commander in Chief.
His remarks to AIPAC this morning were straight from his heart without notes. I’m certain Prime Minister Netanyahu would vote for Newtif he could.
The world is too dangerous to put anyone else in the seat of US power.
Did you hear what Bar said about the primary? What a hypocrite! Her candidate has run the dirtiest campaign I’ve ever seen!
I would have voted for Newt as well. No games for me.
Wonderful!
God bless you and your eldest!
