PARIS, March 5 (Reuters)- France's prime minister urged Muslims and Jews to consider scrapping their halal and kosher slaughter laws on Monday as President Nicolas Sarkozy and his allies stepped up their efforts to woo far-right voters.
Prime Minister Francois Fillon made the suggestion after Sarkozy called at the weekend for butchers to clearly label meat slaughtered according to religious laws and his allies warned immigrants might impose halal meat on French schoolchildren.
Fillon and other conservative leaders linked this tough stand on ritually prepared meat to issues such as immigration and French identity that the far-right National Front uses to tap into resentment against Europe's largest Muslim minority.
"Religions should think about keeping traditions that don't have much in common with today's state of science, technology and health problems," Fillon told Europe 1 radio while discussing the two-round presidential election ending May 6.

In practice France would make an exception for Halal. This is no different that our Presidents contraception position vs Catholics, other than there seems to be more support for Barry. Like the attempted circumcision bans in CA, this is another area for government abuse.

I would hope that French Jews would value the Word of G-d more highly than they value the word of their Prime Minister.
This has a connection with the coming “Psalm 83 War” between Israel and its neighbors. Animal sacrifice will be reinstituted on the Temple Mount after Israel wins that war.
The Psalm 83 War is imminent.
Israel cannot afford to let Iran go nuclear. However, Iran IS going nuclear.
Once Iran has a nuclear bomb, it will use it against Israel. Israel cannot absorb a nuclear first strike, so it must stop Iran by force.
Israel will destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities in Elam (West Central Iran, includes Bushehr nuclear site). Ref. Jeremiah 49:34-39. The affected populations will scatter from the area, probably because of the resulting radioactive fallout.
When Israel strikes Iran, all of the countries that surround Israel will strike Israel.
Israel cannot afford to fight any kind of protracted war. Israel will have to put a stop to the war against it immediately. It will strike its neighboring countries with a devastating blow. It will use a limited version of its Samson option. It will use nuclear weapons.
The war will probably take place in 2012, most likely before summer. The war will surely take place before September 4, 2013.
Israel will win the Psalm 83 War decisively. Israel will conquer its surrounding enemies including the Arab populations of the Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, Jordanians, Saudi Arabians, and Egyptians.
Damascus will be destroyed with one or more nuclear bombs. Ref. Isaiah 17.
Ammon (Northern Eastern Jordan) and Moab (Central Eastern Jordan) will be destroyed with nuclear bombs.
Israel’s borders will be significantly enlarged. Israel will acquire parts of Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and all of Gaza. Ref. Isaiah 17; Isaiah 11:14; Zephaniah 2:3-10; Zechariah 10:10; Obadiah 19-20.
Israel’s fortunes will increase. Its national stature will be enhanced.
Importantly, the Muslims will be expelled from the Temple Mount.
Once the Muslims are expelled from the Temple Mount, the Israeli government will allow Israeli access to it and the performance of animal sacrifice on it. This will be a dramatic gesture with political benefits for the Israeli government in power at the time. The religious parties will support the action, strengthening the ruling party’s political power. More, the Temple Mount will be a unifying symbol for the entire nation.
The following four events will occur in sequence before the end of September 4, 2013.
1) The destruction of Iranian nuclear capabilities in Elam, ref. Jeremiah 49:34-39
2) Psalm 83 War (probably before summer, 2012)
3) Resumption of animal sacrifice on the Temple Mount
4) Animal sacrifice on the Temple Mount abolished (exactly on September 4, 2013)

The historical pattern in Europe is to ban Kosher slaughter, which makes consumption of meat difficult. Currently illegal in Norway, Denmark and Sweden and Switzerland. The Swiss ban is centuries old, the others are recent.
The French, despite their late coming but valuable support (motivated by their interest in bringing Britain down a few pegs) for our revolution, were never party to the fundamentals underpinning the American experiment. Anti-clericalism is as much a part of their political soul as freedom of religion is a part of ours. Now this is running up against a rabidly violent and rapidly breeding minority, as much defined by its North African racial origins as it is by its belief in a monolithic, theocratic, and aggressively alien religion.
I don’t know all the intricacies of Halal, but Kosher butchering is mainly all about cleanliness and proper meat handling processes. I don’t know why anybody would get their panties in a bunch over it.
Have you ever seen an animal slaughtered by that method? If you condone that, might as well throw out ALL of your anti-cruelty to animals legistlation. In fact, I might surmise if animal welfare came into it, the practice would be outlawed, and any Christian would be horrified to witness what an animal suffers with its throat cut as it bleeds to death.
What both religions have against stunning the animal before they cut its throat I simply cannot understand.
Yes... I’ve seen beef cattle slaughtered under kosher conditions. I don’t agree that it is particularly cruel. What is less cruel? The way a gazelle dies in the serengeti under the teeth of a big cat? If you wish to stop the former, I would think you have a plan to stop the latter as well. What plan is that?
No need to put words into my mouth, I don’t have any plans...I just happen to believe that stunning before slaughter is preferable.
Like placing a lobster into the freezer - and not dropping the live creature into boiling water.
The kosher aspect is ancillary; no one is really focusing on that.
It all started nearly 2 weeks ago when a news magazine Envoyé Spécial aired a segment on halal slaughterhouses which informed everyone that 100% of the meat slaughtered in the Paris region is halal. 100%!! And nothing requires it to be labelled as such, it’s the operator’s choice, so halal meat is being put onto the French market as regular meat.
Marine Le Pen publicized it (at first saying 100% of the meat sold in the Paris region was halal, which they say is not true) and it blew up from there.
I just read something yesterday saying the EU’s current position is that requiring meat to be labelled halal is “discriminatory” since it would permit boycotts and so it is not permissible to require halal labels. And what the EU says goes.
I personally do not agree with the halal methods of killing animals and I do not want to eat halal, but the EU obviously does not believe consumers have any rights in that respect.
