A local radio station has yanked the Rush Limbaugh Show from its airwaves in response to remarks in which the controversial talk-show host called a female law student a "slut" and "prostitute" over her support of health insurance coverage of birth control.
On Monday, AM 1420 WBEC , along with KPUA in Hilo Hawaii, dropped the weekday syndicated program because of Limbaughs offensive remarks last week toward Sandra Fluke.
"Certainly his comments were outrageous," said WBEC General Manager Peter Barry. "Theres no reason to resort to derogatory comments."
WBEC and KPUA are the first of the 645 stations that air Limbaugh to cancel the show. In addition, nine national sponsors have stopped advertising on the program. Limbaugh apologized over the weekend for his comments.
WBEC first announced the shows cancellation just prior to its regular airing from noon to 3 p.m. The announcements continued throughout the three-hour time slot, temporarily being filled by a national sports talk program, according to Barry.
"Were covering with Fox Sports News until we can find an alternative for Limbaugh," he said.
Reaction to WBEC silencing Limbaugh has been mixed.
Barry said hes received dozens of emails from people around the country praising the stations action, while several loyal listeners of Limbaugh called WBEC Monday afternoon to criticize the move.

This can be interpreted that Barry possibly had a motive all along to pull the plug on Rush. He was just waiting for an excuse.
Perhaps we can email Barry to ask him. peterb@live959.com
Here are quotes from the link shown inthe comments:
“The nature of Rush’s programming has always presented challenges for us and he’s always pushed the envelope. But this time he’s taken it too far.”
Barry says he doesn’t anticipate that the station will broadcast Limbaugh’s program in the future. He says the station has yet to fill the afternoon 12-3 time slot.
Can someone do some research on Peter Barry? I’ll bet he’s a big Lefty.
Just the kind of mistake that gets made when emotions or politics take hold of business decision.
Sounds like a competitor just got a prime opportunity for a ratings coup. Betcha they don’t miss the opening.

“In addition, nine national sponsors have stopped advertising on the program”
We need to make sure these companies are boycotted.
I'd Love to see the before and after Arbitron numbers. Anyone got access to them?
Maybe the station can fit Ed Sgt Schultz in that time slot, he’ll lose them a bunch of money and only calls conservatives sluts.
Remember, this is in Massachusetts. As of right now, Barry has lost two advertisers due to his decision. I don’t know if he has notified all of his advertisers of the change in programming.
12 emails? What a joke
ROTFLMBO! Only 643 more to go.
Rush is calling women sluts for taking the pill and Coulter is telling college students that she doesn’t think they should be able to vote. I see a winning strategy developing here, for the democrats.
They’ll probably replace him with Bill Maher. I’m actually surprised that he was on in the People’s Republic of Massachusetts to begin with.
Anyone can listen live on internet. At Rush site you get parodies instead of commercials.
There are a lot of business people making really bad business decisions. If you’re selling bedding, legal services, radio ads, or whatever — betting against Rush is a bad career move. Don’t doubt me...
Truth hurts.
“over her support of health insurance coverage of birth control. “
Not quite- her demands that a Jesuit college provide birth control for “free” is more like it.
Station will probably go bankrupt.
I guarantee it.
Will Obama Super PAC Return Misogynist Bill Maher’s Million-Dollar Donation?
“12 emails? What a joke”
Do you think us freepers might be able to hit him with double that number?
