When did Santorum move to second in total votes? I didn’t think there would be enough votes cast in Washington to move it (but I have not seen a total since before Washington).

After Michigan/Arizona. He got 50,000 more votes than Gingrich in Arizona, and 240,000 more votes than Gingrich in Michigan. Michigan had a LOT more voters than South Carolina — they just lost half their delegates because SC gets “favored” status while Michigan had to sacrifice half their delegates to move their primary up.

So with Michigan/Arizona, Santorum finally made up the 300,000 vote deficit he had from the Florida primary.

Santorum now has 1,071K votes, to GIngrich 978K.
